Duke University Health System- Pickens Family Medicine Clinic seeks to hire an experienced Registered Nurse - Lactation Consultant, who will embrace our mission of Advancing Health Together.

Occ Summary

The Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is an expert in the management of the breast-feeding mother-baby dyad. The Lactation Consultant works collaboratively with the Birthing Center, Neonatal Intensive Care nursery, Pediatrics, OB, Family Practice, and nursing care teams to develop feeding plans for a range of infants from the normal newborn to the complex neonate.

Work Performed

Provide lactation support and services to breastfeeding mother/infant dyads. Collaborate with assigned team to develop feeding plans. Use current evidence to develop feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the family's breastfeeding goals. Assess adequacy of breastfeeding and provides interventions and patient education as necessary for correction and/or prevention of feeding problems. Assists mothers of infants who cannot breastfeed to establish and maintain a milk supply and store their milk appropriately. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team and outpatient IBCLC to provide continuity of care upon discharge or transfer of patients. Provide breastfeeding education and materials to patients as needed. Teach, coach, support and mentor nursing staff and other healthcare learners to promote evidence-based clinical practice and support breastfeeding skills. Must maintain certification as lactation consultant (IBCLC).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent teaching, verbal, and written communication skills essential. Experience in teaching 1-to-1 or in small groups. Understanding of diverse cultural, physical, emotional, and psychological response to birthing, lactation, and parenting.

Education

Bachelor's degree in nursing, health, nutrition, or related field required.

Experience

2 years of experience required.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

IBCLC Certification by IBLCE (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) is required.
