Job Summary
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Programs, the coordinator administers all aspects of the aquatics program, including training and mentoring lifeguards and instructors, budget and policy management, travel and event planning, risk management and program planning and scheduling. The coordinator works with campus and community partners to develop new relationships, initiatives, policies, and procedures.

Day-to-day functions are accomplished with minimal guidance or supervision in accordance with established policies and directives. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, acquires and maintains certifications, develops professional contacts with colleagues, and attends professional development courses. Other duties as assigned.

NOTE: Must make a reasonable effort to obtain CPO, WSIT and LGIT certifications within 12 months of hire (if not currently certified). Must obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of employment start date and maintain an acceptable driving record during employment to drive a UT Dallas-owned vehicle or golf cart.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in relevant field; experience in developing and operating a recreation program; certification in CPR & First Aid; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Master's degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Recreation Management, Student Affairs or related field
  • One to three (1-3) years of directly related aquatics experience within a collegiate recreation program.
  • Current CPO certification, LGIT, WSIT
  • Current certification as American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and positively with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective, working relationships. Exceptional customer service orientation is essential.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems as well as devise solutions. Must also be able to work independently as well as to work collaboratively.
  • Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning, and time management skills with the ability to manage concurrent projects and handle multiple priorities at once. Must also have a strong focus on attention to detail. Strong project management skills are essential.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365
  • Collaborate with nationally accredited aquatics and safety certifying organizations to host workshops and certification programs.
  • Serve on designated Student Affairs and University committees.
  • Initiate collaborations with campus partners within Student Affairs and academic units to develop and implement programs and events that contribute to student success and foster relationships with interested groups, and special events.
  • During certain times of year, this position requires routine evening and/or weekend supervision due to the nature of program activities.

Other Qualifications
To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and monitor short and long-range planning for aquatic programs, to include a structured training program for lifeguards and water safety instructors, and including monthly training clinics, certification/continuing education programs and opportunities, and evaluations.
  • Develop and implement the University's swimming classes, swimming lessons, and certification courses, including teaching as an instructor.
  • Hire and supervise part time and student staff which includes scheduling, assigning work, reviewing performance, recommending salary increases, promotions, or terminations.
  • Oversees regular maintenance, repair, and operations of the 6 lane, 187,000 gallon pool, as well as the pump room.
  • Attend classes/lessons and conduct instructor and program evaluations at least once a year.
  • Develop clear and measurable systems to track and report progress.
  • Responsible for equipment purchasing and annual inventory compilation.
  • Ensure that all equipment is in working order and usable before the start of each semester.
  • Develop and implement programmatic risk management protocols and safety audits.
  • Collect and report monthly participation records.


Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Physical/Environmental Demands: Swim, bend, crawl, reach above shoulders, carry lift over 25-50 lbs., squat, climb, handle objects, kneel, stand, push/pull, walk for long distances, sit for long periods of time.
Environmental Conditions:
This position includes exposure to pool chemicals and marked changes in temperature or humidity.

Remote Work Notice: After the probationary period, this role may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote/partly in office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval. Must be located within the DFW Area and have the ability to be on campus with 24 hours of notice. A UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required within 14 days after approval.
