Job Summary

We are hiring an experienced Traveling Fiber Technician II to support fiber optic, structured cabling, and data center infrastructure projects nationwide. This role requires at least 2 years of fiber and data center experience, with advanced skills in fiber termination, splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and infrastructure installation. Candidates must be comfortable with extensive travel, extended workweeks, and physically demanding indoor and outdoor work environments.

Job Responsibilities




  • Install and rough-in fiber optic and structured cabling infrastructure.



  • Route, dress, secure, and label fiber and copper cabling.



  • Terminate single-mode and multimode fiber using LC, SC, ST, FC, MPO/MTP, SC-APC, and other applicable connector types.



  • Perform fusion and mechanical splicing on indoor, OSP, loose-tube, and tight-buffered fiber.



  • Perform OTDR and Fluke DTX/DSX testing to certify fiber links and validate system performance.



  • Interpret OTDR traces and test results to identify and troubleshoot end-to-end fiber issues.



  • Calculate and validate single-mode and multimode fiber loss budgets for system acceptance.



  • Terminate CAT3/CAT5 copper cabling, punch 110/66 blocks, and perform horizontal and riser continuity testing.



  • Diagnose opens, shorts, transposed pairs, fiber faults, and other connectivity issues across large project sites.



  • Install racks, backboards, patch panels, grounding, hardware, and labeling for telecom closet buildouts.



  • Perform rack-and-stack installation of equipment.



  • Build server racks and complete rack elevations according to project requirements.



  • Install fiber trays, ladder racks, cable management systems, power trays, cabinets, and related infrastructure.



  • Support Outside Plant (OSP) installations, including routing fiber into data center facilities.



  • Read and follow blueprints, drawings, rack elevations, and installation specifications.



  • Receive, organize, stage, and assemble project materials and hardware.



  • Complete timesheets, test results, work orders, labeling, job logs, and other field documentation accurately and on time.



  • Communicate professionally with project teams, supervisors, customers, and other onsite personnel.



  • Follow established safety procedures, including proper PPE, jobsite housekeeping, equipment safety, and OSHA requirements.




Job Requirements




  • Minimum of 2 years of data center technician experience.



  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on fiber optic experience.



  • Advanced experience terminating LC, SC, ST, FC, MPO/MTP, and other fiber connector types across single-mode and multimode systems.



  • Hands-on proficiency with fusion and mechanical splicing, including indoor, OSP, loose-tube, and tight-buffered fiber.



  • Advanced experience using OTDR and Fluke DTX/DSX equipment to certify links, interpret test results, troubleshoot faults, and validate system performance.



  • Experience calculating and validating single-mode and multimode fiber loss budgets.



  • Experience terminating CAT3/CAT5 cabling, punching 110/66 blocks, and performing continuity testing.



  • Strong field troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose opens, shorts, transposed pairs, fiber faults, and related cabling issues.



  • Experience completing telecom closet buildouts, including racks, patch panels, grounding, backboards, hardware, and labeling.



  • Working knowledge of TIA/EIA and applicable IES standards.



  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, infrastructure drawings, rack elevations, and project specifications.



  • Ability to maintain accurate timesheets, test results, work orders, labeling records, and job logs.



  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully on rotating field sites and in physically demanding environments.



  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.



  • Active OSHA 10 certification preferred.



  • Ability to use basic hand tools, including a multi-bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle-nose pliers, channel-lock pliers, punch-down tool, flashlight, and tool pouch.



  • Must have appropriate work boots, including steel-toe or composite-toe footwear, gloves, and required PPE.



  • Ability to work safely from ladders and scissor lifts, at heights, in ceilings, and in confined spaces.



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move materials or equipment weighing up to 75 pounds with appropriate assistance or equipment.



  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform hands-on work throughout the shift.



  • Ability to work in very hot outdoor conditions as required.



  • Ability and willingness to travel full time to project sites.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Full-time travel is required.



  • Typical project rotation consists of approximately four weeks onsite followed by a long weekend at home.



  • Home weekends are typically Friday through Sunday, with technicians expected to return to the project site by Monday.



  • Typical shift start time is 7:00 a.m.



  • Typical work schedule is approximately 50-60 hours per week.



  • Extended shifts and overtime may be required based on project needs.



  • Work is performed across rotating project sites and may include data centers, telecommunications spaces, construction environments, ceilings, elevated work areas, and outdoor locations.



  • Candidates must be prepared to work in very hot outdoor conditions.
