Office of General Counsel

Job Description

The University is seeking one or more Health Care Attorneys to join the Health Care Practice Group of its Office of General Counsel. The Health Care Attorneys will provide essential support to MU Health Care, MU School of Medicine, and other clinical operations and health schools within the University of Missouri system. These positions will provide legal guidance on routine, moderately complex, and complex matters, aiming to ensure compliance with legal standards and policies. The attorneys will work closely with senior leaders for health schools and operations to analyze problems, assess risks, and inform decisions that impact policies, procedures, and practices.

The University is seeking candidates with the following experience and expertise:

Transactional and corporate emphasis: Experience in health care transactions, contracting (managed care, professional and facility service, supply chain, and health IT), and corporate matters is preferred.

Health care regulatory and operational emphasis: Experience in health care regulatory compliance and operational matters is preferred.

This posting is a tiered posting with [cross-reference Counsel I and Counsel II positions]. The University may fill two positions. Candidates are encouraged to indicate whether they wish to be considered for a transactional/corporate position, health care regulatory and operational position, or both positions in their cover letters.

Key Responsibilities:
* Provide legal counsel and support on routine, moderately complex, and complex legal matters about health care operations and schools.
* Assess the application of university policy and legal authorities to diverse client scenarios involving multiple internal stakeholders.
* Provide tailored legal advice on health contracting and legal issues, considering varied perspectives among stakeholders.
* Coordinate with the contracting office and business leaders on transactional matters, including contract negotiation and drafting.
* Provide legal advice on the development of objectives and general policies and procedures within the scope of established operational goals and plans.
* Monitor work performance and provide feedback to team members as needed.
* Collaborate within the health care legal team to enhance processes and promote compliance with legal standards and policies.
* Conduct training sessions to equip University faculty and staff with the necessary legal knowledge and skills for their roles.
* Work closely with senior management and leaders in health schools and clinical health operations.

Candidates must have a Juris Doctor or LLB degree from an ABA accredited law school and be in good standing with all bars or bar associations and no prior disciplinary matters. Admission to Missouri Bar or eligibility for admission by reciprocity is necessary. At least five (5) years' experience is required with knowledge of federal, state and local laws preferred. Shift

Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm. Evening and weekend work may be required

Minimum Qualifications

A Juris Doctor or LLB degree from an ABA accredited law school and at least 8 years of experience with a significant specialized experience in at least one area. License to practice law in Missouri or eligible for admission to the Missouri Bar.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience providing legal counsel within a health care or academic institution.
* Five or more years of experience in a law firm, corporate legal office, or governmental agency providing legal advice to clients and client representatives
* Familiarity with relevant healthcare laws, regulations, and industry standards, including privacy laws and laws applicable to health research.
* Prior experience with health care transactions, contract negotiation, drafting, and review for healthcare entities and academic institutions.
* Prior experience with health care regulatory compliance and operations;
* Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including the ability to set priorities and define operating standards.
* Experience working with interdisciplinary teams and diverse stakeholders.
* Demonstrated ability to handle highly complex information with sensitivity and discretion.
* Strong understanding of the unique legal challenges faced by health care organizations.
* Membership in relevant professional organizations or associations related to health law.
* Proficiency in standard business and legal office application systems/software, along with comfort in utilizing business and legal applications.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $190,000.00 - $210,000.00 per year
