Primary Purpose of the Organization:
Fayetteville State Housing & Residence Life works diligently to provide a comfortable and safe environment structured to enhance the academic climate at FSU. The Fayetteville State University Department of Police and Public Safety is responsible for maintaining a safe learning and working environment for our students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
The Property Security Officer for Student Affairs will provide security services to FSU residential communities and the Rudolph Jones Student Center. The property security officer for student affairs will operate within the Fayetteville State University Department of Police and Public Safety.

Area of Assignment:

Residence Halls - The residence hall property security officer will provide security for Housing and Residence Life. This position will be responsible for patrolling the designated residence hall, lobby area, hallways, exterior entrances/exits, and other areas within or immediately around the residence hall. This position will also be responsible for monitoring access in each residence hall by checking IDs and Hall Entry Cards for each student that enters the building along with guest registration during the assigned work hours. Additional duties & responsibilities listed below.

Working Hours:

  • Hours may be up to 32 hours per week. Rotating Shifts, to include days, evening, and night shifts; weekends, overtime, and holiday work required.


Rudolph Jones Student Center - The RJSC property security officer will provide security for the R.J. student center on the campus of Fayetteville State University. The RJSC is the social hub of the university, provides services, amenities, and social spaces for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The building houses student body services, university post office, a 500 seat ballroom, student activity lounge, game room, late night grill, cafeteria, and a 100 seat Movie Theater. The RJSC property security officer will be responsible for patrolling the center hallways, exterior entrances/exits, and other areas within or immediately around the center. In collaboration with police and public safety provide support during special campus events. Additional duties & responsibilities listed below.

Working Hours:

  • Sunday-Thursday | 6:00 PM - 12:00 AM
  • Friday-Saturday | 5:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Primary Purpose of the Position:
Duties & Responsibilities include:
Security, Patrol, and Enforcement

  • Lock and unlock buildings following assigned schedules.
  • Patrol campus buildings and parking lots and report security violations.
  • Provide non-emergency medical transports when required.
  • Foot patrol internal and external campus buildings to ensure the protection of university property.
  • Complete weekly lights-out checks and submit to the supervisor.
  • Answering fire and trouble alarms when needed in campus buildings.
  • Vehicle patrol on all campus property and parking lots while reporting issues, violations, and suspicious incidents to the on-duty police supervisor.


Communication

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, by clearly communicating on a mobile and handheld radio and by completing written reports.
  • Respond to calls for service from community members on a regular basis and provide verbal responses to their requests.
  • Explain policies to university community members and visitors when required.
  • Demonstrate the ability to relate and interact with members of the department, university and community groups as required.

Technical Knowledge

  • Demonstrate the ability to properly use all assigned equipment.
  • Be able to read and send messages using the university e-mail system.
  • Attend mandatory in-service training classes when required. Review university and department policies on a regular basis.

Decision Making:

  • Recognize security problems and take appropriate actions to resolve.
  • Notify the on-duty supervisor and chain of command when security problems are discovered that cannot be immediately resolved.

Physical Demands of Position:

  • Must have the ability to drive a state vehicle in all weather conditions.
  • Traverse in and move about in buildings, around campus, up and down hills and stairs, checking buildings and doors.
  • Physical awareness and alert of surroundings at all times for security breaches.
  • Ability to use a mobile and handheld radio.
  • Must stand or remain in a stationary position at a security post, inside and outside in all types of weather for up to 3-4 hours.

Operational Requirements:

  • Work flexible shifts on any day of the week that includes holidays or weekends to assist with operational and special event assignments.
  • This position is essential and is required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters and other emergency conditions, and during campus closings.
  • Current undergraduate students of FSU are not eligible to apply to this position.

Other duties as Assigned
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
  • A valid driver's license. Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record, preferably five or more years of driving experience with no more than one minor at fault accident or violation in the past three years.

Knowledge skills and abilities:

  • Ability to sit or stand for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to operate a variety of machines and equipment including automobiles, office equipment, radio, telephone.
  • Ability to operate low-speed vehicles (LSVs), Bicycles, or any other equipment assigned in order to assist in performing their essential job functions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to effectively deal with university students, faculty, staff and the public.
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to understand verbal and written direction, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, which includes stressful situations.
  • Ability to work independently in absence of a supervisor, be able to make observations and write clear, concise, accurate reports containing acceptable content with proper grammar and punctuation reflecting these observations.
  • Ability to interact with the general public, students, staff and faculty in a collaborative manner.
  • Must be able to work ALL shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years if experience as a property security officer.
  • Security experience, particularly in a campus environment, is preferred.
