Job Description Summary
The Area Director is responsible for creating and maintaining an environment conducive to the growth and well-being of students assigned to a given residential area. This is the professional resident staff member for an area housing approximately 250-300 students and 10 - 12 Resident Assistants. The Area Director is responsible for the delivery of important student development functions in the three residence halls and is a member of the staff in the Department of Residential Life.
The Area Director is a 12-month, full-time live-in position. Weekend duty rotation is required and shared with other staff as scheduled. Many duties require evening and weekend hours.

Essential Functions

  • Staff Supervision - Responsible for supervision of 10-12 Resident Assistants. Responsibilities include team building, goal and expectation setting, on-going formal and informal evaluation, and other personnel-related activities. ADs are expected to meet with their whole staff weekly and individually with their RAs weekly or biweekly as their staff member needs. Area Directors, in their 1:1 meetings with RAs discuss resident concerns, RA programing requirements, and other support to their RA. Area Directors also plan with their staff semesterly staff development events. Should an RA not meet their job duties, the AD will also document that behavior in the form of a corrective action plan and work with the RA to implement the recommended actions.
  • Duty Coverage - Share coverage on a rotating basis, with other Area Directors and Graduate Assistants. Area Directors will have approximately 3-4 weeks a semester, and 2-3 weeks during the summer but will be determined based on staff needs each semester. Responsibilities include direct interaction with the RAs on duty in all areas; monitoring halls; responding to emergencies; confronting disruptive behavior, etc. Duty is 24/7 for the given week (7-day period), with 2-3 rounds that need to be completed between 8 pm - 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays. While on duty during the semester, Area Directors may leave campus but must be able to respond and be on site within 10-15 minutes. While on duty during the summer, Area Directors may leave campus but must be able to respond and be on site within 45 minutes.
  • Resident Support - Advise/counsel individuals and groups of students on personal, residential living, or other matters. Make referrals to other areas of the College when appropriate. It is expected that the Area Director will do weekly rounds of their residential area to get to know their residents.
  • Behavioral Standards - Ensure staff and residents are aware of the rules and responsibilities of residents of the housing system. Assist students in developing behavioral standards appropriate to group living in an academic institution. When necessary, confront individuals and groups whose behavior is unacceptable and initiate appropriate student conduct action/referral.
  • Staff Development - Assist in the development of and participate in all fall, mid-year, and in-service training programs. Attend weekly Full ResLife staff meetings and Central Staff staff meetings.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records for furnishings, equipment, and supplies. Oversee the maintenance and operation of the entire residence area including building keys, Maintenance Requests, etc.
  • Lead and assist in departmental operations including housing selection; RA selection and training; and opening and closing of the residence halls. Assignments of these projects are made on an annual basis.
  • Represent the department on divisional and college-wide committees as time permits.

Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree
Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

  • Master's degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, and Guidance or related field preferred.
  • Preferred demonstrated experience in the supervision of staff and management of a residential community.
  • Strong conflict resolution and mediation skills; computer experience; must possess the ability to work with and serve as a role model for a diverse resident population.

  • Sitting: Administrative work. meeting with students, Conduct hearings.
  • Stooping, Keeling, Crawling, Crouching: Checking student rooms at hall closing.
  • Ability to communicate: Staff meeting contributions, Conducting RA 1:1 meetings, Attending Supervision meetings, Training presentations.
