Primary Purpose of Position
Work in this class involves the construction, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage underground and overhead primary and secondary electric distribution lines. Install and maintain New River Light and Power's fiber-optic network.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of high school and six months of electrical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Functions
This position is responsible for working with live high voltage conductors, maintenance of electrical equipment, installation of underground power lines, and the repair of overhead lines and poles.

Climbing, hand work, digging, heavy lifting, and all weather exterior work is required.

This position will be trained in the use of safety techniques including: climbing gear, bucket trucks, high voltage gloves, and hoses.

Install and maintain New River Light and Power's fiber-optic network.

CDL Class B will be required within 6 months of hire.

Candidates will be required to complete the NC and NRLP apprenticeship program through New River Light & Power.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Knowledge, skills, and abilities that involve routine and emergency construction, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage underground and overhead primary and secondary electric distribution lines.

Learns and develops thorough knowledge of all applicable codes and methods of installation and repair.

Learns how to read and interpret schematics drawing and recommend corrective actions.

Develops proficiency with SCADA, AMI, OMS and electronic systems to support in-field planning and troubleshooting.

Must have the ability to operate University owned vehicles with valid driver's license.

Ability to complete the registered apprenticeship program within the allotted timeframe as determined upon hire. Develops journeyman level skills and knowledge, with ability to complete both physical and technical duties upon program completion.

Must live or relocate to within approximately a 20 minute commute of Boone within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
High school graduate. At least 1 year of experience at an electric utility or credentials from an Electrical Utility Lineman School Program.

Holds CDL Class B license.

Lives within 20 minutes of Boone, NC.

Equipment Operation: 1. Applies thorough knowledge and skill in the operation and use of applicable equipment, tool and vehicle in the operation, construction, maintenance and repair of primary and secondary overhead and underground distribution facilities.
Knowledge-Technical: 1. Applies thorough knowledge of construction, installation and maintenance of applicable systems, standard practices, materials, and techniques involved in the construction of primary and secondary overhead and underground distribution facilities. 2. Applies thorough knowledge of all applicable codes and methods of installation and repair; Read and interpret schematics drawing and recommend corrective actions.

Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 4:00 pm. Some callback and after hours required.

Designated as MANDATORY, this position is expected to be available for work during university emergencies, closings, adverse weather conditions, and other department defined events. Will be part of after hours on call response rotation.

Candidates will be required to complete some (based on experience level) or all portions of the NC and NRLP apprenticeship program through New River Light & Power and sign an agreement accordingly.

Candidate may be asked to demonstrate physical and basic technical knowledge as part of the interview and consideration process.
