HJF is seeking a Data Manager II to assist with the research data handling requirements for a research study/protocol. This includes source document design, screen testing and approval, research data set creation and scientific graphics.

This position will be in support of the Uniformed Services University's Surgical Critical Care Initiative and the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics (PMB). The Surgical Critical Care Initiative (SC2i), funded by the Department of Defense was established in 2013. SC2i is a Uniformed Services University center that leverages legacy information from service members, and critically ill civilian and military patients to develop biomarker-driven clinical decision support tools (CDSTs) with the goal of improving patient clinical outcomes and reducing costs across the injury/disease cycle.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


  • Building and maintaining data dictionaries/codebooks: permissible value sets, units, thresholds, required-field designations, variable definitions.
  • Harmonizing variables across sites where the same concept is collected differently - including multi-select/checkbox fields, which are the usual source of silent mapping errors.
  • Managing change control: document additions, modifications, and deprecations with effective dates so prior analyses remain reproducible.
  • Resolving harmonization conflicts across sites, escalating clinical questions to investigators for adjudication.
  • Developing SOPs, data entry conventions, and training materials; train and support site coordinators under the supervision of the
  • Assisting researchers in retrieving information from the databases and other multiple data sources.
  • Providing data management and quality reports as requested. Working with the Development Team to provide ad hoc data sets for biostatisticians as required to ensure that research needs are being met.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of clinical databases, data upload, and statistical data set creation for data analysis.
  • Experience with relational databases
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with at least one other electronic data capture or clinical data system is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Python and SQL is a plus.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
  • This is a hybrid position with 3 days on-site.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $61,000-$85,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
