Overview The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for the design, maintenance, and reliability improvement of the equipment in the steam distribution system. The Sr Engineer will have technical responsibility over steam distribution equipment such as all valves, traps, pumps, covers, sensors, and other associated distribution equipment. The Sr Engineer will also oversee and manage projects related to the design and modification of Steam Equipment. The Sr Engineer will work with vendors to create and update designs, review and approve design packages, and approve equipment prototypes. The Sr Engineer will also monitor and track new equipment performance. The Sr Engineer will also create, review and update the Con Edison Steam Distribution Equipment specifications, purchase and test specifications as well as operation and maintenance specifications and any new training documents needed for new equipment. The Sr Engineer will assist the field in troubleshooting any equipment installation, operation issues, and verifying main valve turn Ons, which could be off hours and weekends. Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Create, review and update the Con Edison Steam Distribution Equipment specifications (Purchase and Test, Operation and Maintenance).
- Inspect, analyze, and resolve equipment field issues that would impact the safe and reliable operation of the steam system.
- Provide support to steam operations with field and laboratory analyses related to equipment failures, functionality, and performance.
- Take a project management role and work with vendors and other departments within Con Edison to develop new equipment and/or to improve the functionality of existing equipment (R&D, EH&S, Steam Operations, etc.)
- Monitor, track, and inspect new prototype equipment being deployed through Research and Development projects.
- Prepare training and documentation related to the commissioning of new equipment.
- Capable of assuming full responsibility and a leadership role when responding to emergency field problems in his/her field of expertise.
- Present on technical topics related to Con Edisons steam distribution equipment and special projects.
- Cross train in other areas of Steam Distribution Engineering such as system engineering, new business development, pipeline interference, design, metering, and maps/records to gain an understanding in all aspects of the Steam Distribution Engineering section.
- Create and sustain a workplace environment that fosters professionalism, honesty, concern, excellence and teamwork.
- May perform Sequence Engineering duties off-shift and on weekends.
- May perform other related assignment or task as needed.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and A minimum of eight (8) years of engineering work experience in the design and application of engineering principles in area of expertise. Experience should be acceptable to NY State for P.E. examination eligibility. or
- Master's Degree With a bachelor's degree in engineering and A minimum of six (6) years of engineering work experience in the design and application of engineering principles in area of expertise. Experience should be acceptable to NY State for P.E. examination eligibility.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree Mechanical Engineering
Relevant Work Experience
- Strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to diplomatically interact with internal and external customers, support staffs and various levels of management, required.
- Comfortable working in and around steam, including field visits and on-site engineering support & knowledge of relevant corporate environmental and safety procedures, required.
- Effective at presenting technical information and representing Distribution Engineering to other departments, non-technical groups and executives, required.
- Strong knowledge of the appropriate Engineering and Operating Procedures and Engineering Specifications & ability to understand and review engineering sketches, drawings, maps, plates, and loose-leaf (as built), required.
- Ability to provide guidance in the creation of these drawings and schematics & demonstrate proficiency with Computer applications, required.
- Ability and willingness to travel to vendor sites and attend conferences, required.
- Able to respond to field requests and emergencies during off hours, required.
- Supervisory experience of professional and/or union employees, preferred.
- Experience with purchase specification development and vendor management, preferred.

- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed, required.
- Comfortable working in active steam facilities, required.
