Due to continued growth within our National Laboratory Practice, Mead & Hunt is seeking a full-time, experienced Architect to lead the architectural delivery of sophisticated laboratory projects throughout the United States. Our laboratory team works with public-sector, environmental, water quality, public health, higher education, industrial, research, and specialized testing clients to create facilities that support science, innovation, and discovery.

This position offers the opportunity to work on highly technical projects that require exceptional coordination between architecture, laboratory planning, engineering disciplines, specialty consultants, contractors, and laboratory users. This exciting opportunity is available at the following office locations: Middleton, WI (greater Madison area), Bloomington, MN, or Tampa, FL.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead architectural design, technical development, and project delivery from early planning through occupancy.
  • Establish project design goals, technical direction, quality expectations, and deliverable requirements.
  • Ensure architectural solutions align with laboratory operational requirements, project budgets, and client objectives.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout all phases of design and construction.
  • Coordinate architecture with laboratory planning, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, process utility, instrumentation, and specialty disciplines.
  • Manage integration of laboratory equipment, casework, specialty systems, and building infrastructure.
  • Lead interdisciplinary coordination meetings and drive resolution of complex technical issues.
  • Coordinate in-house and consultant team members throughout project development.
  • Partner with Project Managers to develop project work plans, staffing strategies, schedules, and resource plans.
  • Participate in quality reviews and technical oversight processes.
  • Lead architectural involvement during bidding, construction administration, commissioning support, and project closeout.
  • Review submittals, RFIs, change orders, and field conditions during construction.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Facilitate user group meetings, design workshops, and technical review sessions.
  • Develop and deliver presentations to clients, stakeholders, contractors, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • Support project pursuits, interviews, and proposal development activities.
  • Mentor architectural staff and support professional development.
  • Share technical expertise and best practices across offices and project teams.
  • Contribute to the continued growth of Mead & Hunt's national laboratory practice.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

The successful candidate must have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in architecture or related field from an accredited college or university
  • At least 10 years of relevant project experience
  • Current architectural license and ability to obtain licensure in additional states as needed.

A valid driver's license and approximately 25% travel will be required.

The ideal candidate will have any/all the following:

  • Science and technology laboratory facilities
  • Other technically complex building types
  • Experience leading architectural teams through all phases of project delivery
  • Experience with CMAR, Design-Build, or other collaborative delivery methods
  • Experience with construction administration and field observation services
  • Client-facing leadership experience
  • Experience mentoring technical staff
  • Experience supporting project pursuits and business development efforts
  • NCARB Certification
  • LEED AP, WELL AP, Guiding Principles Compliance Professional, or similar accreditation
  • Experience or familiarity with generative AI-driven tools, platforms, or systems (e.g. Microsoft Copilot, Chat GPT, Claude, Gemini) to enhance productivity, automate tasks, and reduce errors

Salary Range: $105,000 to $147,000 - Actual compensation may vary due to other factors such as: experience, skill set and/or location.
