A Day in the Life of a Senior Transportation Engineering Manager at Hanson

By joining our Chicago Loop, Lisle, or Peoria office in this role, you will:

  • Step into a leading role on major Hanson projects in Illinois, such as the Tollway I-355/I-88 Interchange master planning project near Chicago and the IDOT I-80 Mississippi River Bridge replacement and interchange reconstruction project between Illinois and Iowa.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, workload coordination, and technical direction for an assigned group of engineers and technical staff.
  • Serve as project engineer on complex transportation assignments, coordinating disciplines and subconsultants, managing design activities, supporting schedules, and reviewing team deliverables.
  • Coach and mentor staff through regular feedback, career discussions, technical guidance, stretch assignments, and performance reviews.
  • Forecast short- and long-term staffing needs by evaluating backlog, anticipated pursuits, resource availability, capability gaps, and hiring requirements.
  • Develop roadway design solutions for complex interstate, tollway, urban arterial, highway, and local road improvement projects.
  • Direct the development of construction plans and contract documents. Author technical documents such as engineering reports and special provisions.
  • Guide roadway design teams using OpenRoads Designer, supported by internal training resources and active user groups.
  • Review complex technical calculations, reports, plans, and deliverables.
  • Lead or support client relationships, pursuits, scopes, fees, and proposals.
  • Provide occasional support for public involvement activities.
  • Travel occasionally for client meetings and site visits.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

The following qualifications will help you succeed in this role:

Skills:

  • Illinois DOT/Tollway planning, design, plan production, and PS&E experience.
  • Working knowledge of roadway design software such as OpenRoads Designer.
  • Familiarity with OpenRoads Designer 3D modeling for roadway projects is a plus.
  • Interest in continued learning, professional growth, and expanding technical and leadership skills.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or formally leading engineers and technical staff.
  • Strong technical judgment, problem-solving ability, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Experience leading or supporting quality control reviews to ensure adherence with industry and client design standards.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering is required.
  • Typically 10+ years of professional engineering experience.
  • Minimum of six years of roadway design or transportation engineering experience, including work for IDOT and/or the Illinois Tollway.
  • Illinois Professional Engineer license, or the ability to obtain an Illinois license through reciprocity within six months of hire.

Salary range: $150,000 - $190,000 per year. Compensation will be based on experience, technical qualifications, and overall fit for the role. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
