Mobile Mechanic

HK Solutions Group is seeking a Mobile Mechanic. This position can be based in either Des Moines, IA; Minneapolis, MN; or Kansas City, MO. The Mobile Mechanic travels to active job sites, yards, and staging areas across the service territory to diagnose, repair, and maintain the equipment that keeps crews producing. The fleet includes combination sewer cleaners, vacuum and hydro-excavation trucks, jetters, CCTV inspection vans and camera crawlers, CIPP support equipment such as boilers, UV curing units, and wet-out and refrigerated trailers, along with bypass pumps, generators, air compressors, and service vehicles. The Mobile Mechanic works from a service truck with minimal direct supervision. The measure of the role is to ensure equipment is returned to safe service quickly enough that the crew does not lose the day.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Travel daily to job sites, yards, and staging areas to perform diagnostics, repairs, and scheduled preventive maintenance.
• Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, fittings, and PTO-driven systems on combination and vacuum units.
• Diagnose and repair diesel engines and related fuel, cooling, air intake, exhaust, and aftertreatment systems.
• Repair 12V and 24V electrical systems, wiring harnesses, sensors, controls, and control panel faults on vacuum, jetting, and curing equipment.
• Service high-pressure water systems including water pumps, unloaders, plumbing, hose reels, nozzles, and relief valves.
• Maintain and repair CIPP support equipment, including boilers and steam or hot water systems, UV curing units and light trains, wet-out and refrigerated trailers, generators, and air compressors.
• Repair CCTV inspection equipment including camera crawlers, cable reels, lift systems, and van-mounted power and control systems, coordinating with the manufacturer on warranty and specialty repairs.
• Perform preventive maintenance on schedule and complete DOT annual inspections where qualified.
• Diagnose and repair chassis systems including brakes and air brake systems, suspension, steering, drivetrain, and tires.
• Perform welding and fabrication repairs in the field as needed.
• Document all work in the maintenance system, including hours, parts consumed, failure cause, and labor time, and maintain accurate service history by unit.
• Manage service truck parts inventory, order parts, and coordinate with vendors and manufacturer technical support.
• Remove equipment from service when it cannot be operated safely, and communicate downtime and expected return promptly to scheduling and operations.
• Support the shop with major repairs, overhauls, and equipment commissioning during slower field periods.
• Participate in a rotating after-hours and weekend on-call schedule for emergency breakdowns

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Three or more years of heavy equipment, commercial truck, or industrial equipment repair experience.
• Demonstrated ability to diagnose hydraulic and electrical faults from symptoms rather than by replacing parts in sequence.
• Ability to read and work from hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic schematics.
• Ownership of hand tools customary to the trade.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage a daily route and changing priorities.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record, and the ability to obtain and maintain a DOT medical card.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to pass pre-employment and customer-site drug screening and background checks.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Class A or Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements.
• Experience with CIPP support equipment such as boilers, UV curing systems, and refrigerated trailers.
• Experience with CCTV inspection equipment from Aries, CUES, Envirosight, IBAK, or similar manufacturers.
• ASE certification in the T-series medium and heavy truck categories, or equivalent manufacturer training.
• EPA Section 609 mobile air conditioning certification.
• MIG and stick welding and fabrication capability.
• DOT annual inspector qualification under 49 CFR 396.19.
• Forklift and aerial lift certification.
• Bilingual English/Spanish.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This is a field-based position. Approximately 80% of working time is spent traveling to job sites, yards, and staging areas within the service territory, with overnight stays as the work location requires. Occasional extended travel to support out-of-region projects. Participation in a rotating after-hours and weekend on-call schedule is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position is physically demanding. The employee must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 75 pounds, and occasionally more with assistance or mechanical aid. The work requires frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, crawling, and overhead reaching; working from ladders and beneath or on top of equipment; repeatedly climbing into and out of trucks; and sustained gripping and torquing of hand and power tools. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and mud, and frequently at the roadside near moving traffic. Exposure to hydraulic fluid, diesel fuel, solvents, wastewater and sewer environments, noise, and vibration should be expected. Required PPE includes hard hat, safety glasses or face shield, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and steel-toe footwear; respirator use may be required, subject to medical clearance and fit testing.

• Diagnoses methodically and does not swap parts hoping to find the fault.
• Gives crews and scheduling a realistic repair timeline rather than an optimistic one.
• Keeps the service truck organized and stocked so a second trip is rarely needed.
• Has the judgment and the backbone to red-tag unsafe equipment when a crew is under schedule pressure.
• Treats the field crews as customers and communicates with them directly.
