Lecturer/Assistant Teaching Professor

The Department. The Department consists of fifteen tenure-track faculty members and four full-time lecturers/teaching professors. The B.A. in Criminal Justice (approximately 680 majors) is offered in-person as well as online. The Department also offers minors in Criminal Justice and in Crime Analytics (approximately 150 students combined), as well as an M.S. in Criminal Justice (approximately 35 graduate students). Additionally, the Department contributes coursework to the undergraduate minor in Legal Studies, the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Public Policy, and to the School of Data Science.

The College. As the largest and most academically diverse college at UNC Charlotte, the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences houses 14 departments, 13 interdisciplinary programs, and 7 applied centers. The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a full-time, on-campus position as a Lecturer or Teaching Professor specializing in Distance Education in Criminal Justice and Criminology. The rank is open to Lecturer or Assistant Teaching Professor, and is dependent upon the applicant's education and experience. The start date is August 16, 2027. This is a non-tenure track position. The position has an initial appointment of three years with the possibility of continued reappointments depending upon job performance. The workload of a Lecturer/Assistant Teaching Professor primarily involves teaching undergraduate students (usually four course sections per semester, some of which will be online), but also includes service to the department, college, university, and/or community. This position will assist in the delivery of the Department's newly launched 100% online undergraduate degree program in Criminal Justice.

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

There are four required qualifications for the position: (1) a Master's or Ph.D. in Criminal Justice or Criminology (or a related discipline) or a J.D. at the time of appointment, (2) experience in teaching undergraduate courses across the discipline of Criminal Justice/Criminology at a two-year or four-year college, (3) experience or extensive training in teaching online courses at a two-year or four-year college, and (4) evidence of (or the potential for) teaching excellence.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience teaching courses related to police, courts, corrections, data analytics and/or the responsible use and impact of artificial intelligence in criminal justice is preferred.

Candidates selected for the initial round of Zoom interviews will be asked to provide three reference letters. Finalists who are invited for an on-campus interview will be asked to conduct a classroom teaching demonstration, and to separately discuss/demonstrate their approach to online teaching. Finalists will also be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.
