Position Highlights

The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics invites qualified applicants to apply for a Limited Term Adjunct position. The incumbent will teach one of our construction classes such as CE 381 Construction Engineering Management, CE482/582 Construction Project Planning, Scheduling, and Control, CE485/585 Construction Equipment & Methods, or CE 497/597 a special topics construction course in the spring semester of academic year 2026-27.

CE381 Construction Engineering Management provides an overview of the fundamentals of construction management such as project delivery methods, construction contracts, bid packages, takeoff and estimating, planning and scheduling, equipment ownership and operation, construction labor, cost control, and construction safety.

CE482/582 Construction Project Planning, Scheduling, and Control provides an in depth look at scheduling concepts and implementation of scheduling principles with Oracle's P6 software. Topics include bar charts, network diagrams, critical path method, precedence networks, resource allocation and leveling, schedule updating and project control, schedule compression and time-cost trade-off, schedule reports and memos, construction delays and claims, and schedule risk management.

CE485/585 Construction Equipment & Methods provides an in-depth look at the capabilities of construction equipment, safety measures with construction equipment, methods for calculating productivity, and construction operations with multiple pieces of construction equipment. Topics include soil characteristics, fundamentals of earthmoving, dozers, loaders, scrapers, deep excavation and shoring, concrete and asphalt paving equipment, excavators, soil compactors, lifting and loading equipment, cranes, temporary structures, tunneling, and traffic control.

CE497/597 Special Topics in Construction includes in-depth look at topics relevant to the construction industry.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct three hours of class
    meetings per week. The days and times vary depending on the course, however,
    classes typically meet for 75 minutes twice per week, or 50 minutes
    three times per week. The course syllabus and material will be provided
    by the department head for CE 381, 482/582 or 485/585.
  • Prepare and organize class
    meetings such as content presentation, problem-solving, group learning,
    guest presenters from industry, and site visits.
  • Prepare and assign various
    assignments (e.g., homework, quizzes, etc.) to complement and assess
    team learning activities.
  • Grade student work. When
    the class size is large enough, a grader can be made available and the
    instructor will provide guidance to the grader.
  • Invite and coordinate with
    industry guest presenters. Work with presenters to develop content and
    student activities and assignments that that relate to the guest
    presenter's content.
  • Hold physical or virtual
    office hours weekly throughout the semester. Be available via email
    throughout the week.
  • Enter grades into the UA
    online system.
  • Maintain the course website
    in Brightspace. Campus support is available to help with Brightspace.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD or
    PE with equivalent experience.
  • Extensive
    experience in vertical and/or horizontal construction.
  • The
    willingness to integrate industry partners into the teaching of select
    class topics.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of industry software for project
    management, estimating, scheduling, etc.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing construction projects, field operations, estimating, scheduling, contracts, or project controls. Experience with projects of varying size and complexity. Experience with multiple project delivery methods.
  • Leadership experience in the construction industry.
  • Relevant certifications or licenses such as a P.E. license, CCM, PMP, CPC, contractors license, DBIA, Lean, Envision, OSHA certification, etc.
  • Experience teaching at the university level with preference to having taught this or a similar course.
  • A network of local construction professionals to assist with guest lectures and site visits and connection with construction organizations such as DBIA, AGC, ABA, etc.
