About the role

Reworld is seeking a hands-on Plant Engineer to improve performance, efficiency, and equipment reliability at its waste-to-energy facility in West Wareham, Massachusetts. This position combines field troubleshooting and operations support with applied engineering, process optimization, equipment replacement, and project execution. The successful candidate can interpret operating trends, understand combustion and steam generation, and independently move problems from diagnosis to implemented solutions.

  • Work arrangement: Full-time, on-site
  • Reports to: Manager, Regional Engineering, working closely with the Facility Manager
  • Annual Bonus Target: 10% performance bonus opportunity
  • Sign-on bonus: Eligible for a sign-on bonus.

At Reworld, engineers apply their technical expertise to an essential industry that converts waste into energy and supports more sustainable communities. The Plant Engineer partners with Operations, Maintenance, regional engineering, and corporate process engineering to improve plant output, address recurring equipment problems, and deliver practical engineering improvements.

The role balances operations support and engineering with roughly equal emphasis. It requires someone comfortable investigating plant problems, performing engineering analysis, developing technical recommendations, and coordinating implementation. Plant performance and project execution are the primary focus; all work must support safe operation and applicable environmental requirements. The successful candidate must be able to analyze operating trends, determine why the plant is not achieving expected load or output, and implement practical corrective actions that improve reliability, efficiency, and performance.

Key Responsibilities

Plant Performance and Process Troubleshooting

  • Review daily plant performance metrics, equipment history, alarms, and operating trends to identify deviations from expected performance.
  • Investigate why the plant is not achieving expected load or output, identify contributing process and equipment limitations, and implement corrective actions.
  • Troubleshoot combustion, steam-generation, process-control, and equipment-reliability issues using field observations, engineering calculations, operating data, and root cause analysis.
  • Optimize operating conditions and controls to improve combustion performance, efficiency, equipment availability, and reliable plant output.
  • Prepare performance reports, lead weekly production-improvement discussions, and maintain the facility's Production Action Items list.
  • Present findings, recommendations, implementation needs, and measured results to facility and regional leadership.

Applied Mechanical and Process Engineering

  • Perform engineering calculations, evaluate design alternatives, size equipment, and develop equipment specifications for plant modifications and replacements.
  • Support mechanical and process systems including boilers, pumps, piping, fuel handling, combustion equipment, grates, and spray dryer absorber (SDA) systems.
  • Apply working knowledge of instrumentation, process controls, and basic electrical systems to multidisciplinary troubleshooting and modifications.
  • Evaluate equipment condition and recommend repair, replacement, or redesign based on safety, reliability, performance, lifecycle cost, and operating requirements.
  • Interpret Boiler Condition Assessment Reports and translate findings into prioritized engineering and maintenance recommendations.
  • Obtain required technical reviews and approvals before implementing operational, process, or equipment changes.

Engineering Projects, Outages, and Contractor Oversight

  • Independently develop and execute capital and operational improvement projects, coordinating scope, calculations, design, specifications, budgets, schedules, construction, commissioning, and handover.
  • Coordinate internal technical resources, equipment suppliers, third-party engineers, and contractors across mechanical, process, controls, instrumentation, and electrical disciplines.
  • Provide contractor oversight, monitor work against approved scope and technical requirements, and resolve field issues with Operations and Maintenance.
  • Support planned and unplanned outages through equipment assessments, repair scopes, work prioritization, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Establish and verify testing, commissioning, and return-to-service criteria for completed work.
  • Track project outcomes and confirm that equipment changes or process improvements deliver the intended results.
  • Share successful engineering improvements with other regional facilities when applicable.

Collaboration, Safety, and Compliance

  • Work closely with the Facility Manager, Operations, Maintenance, regional engineering, and corporate process engineering to align priorities and resolve plant issues.
  • Follow facility safety procedures, change-control requirements, and engineering standards throughout troubleshooting and project execution.
  • Support environmental compliance and emissions-performance initiatives related to plant operation and engineering changes. Specialized environmental compliance exposure is helpful, but is not the position's primary focus.

Required Qualifications

  • At least five years of relevant experience in power generation, waste-to-energy, utilities, marine engineering, steam plants, or industrial process facilities.
  • Engineering capability developed through relevant education, engineering licensure, a bachelor's degree in engineering (preferred), substantial equivalent operating experience, or a combination of these pathways.
  • Strong understanding of combustion and steam-generation processes, with the ability to interpret operating trends, troubleshoot performance losses, identify why the plant is not making load, and implement corrective actions.
  • Hands-on mechanical and process troubleshooting experience, including equipment reliability and repair-versus-replacement decisions.
  • Applied engineering experience performing calculations, sizing equipment, and developing equipment specifications.
  • Engineering project management experience, including contractor oversight and coordination of work through implementation and testing.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing plant needs, take ownership of field problems, equipment replacements, and multidisciplinary projects, and drive technical problems and projects to completion with limited oversight.
    * Working knowledge across plant mechanical systems, fuel handling systems, piping, instrumentation, controls, and basic electrical principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, technical presentation, organization, and cross-functional coordination skills.

Preferred Education and Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering; Chemical Engineering and related disciplines are also relevant. An engineering degree is preferred; candidates with substantial equivalent operating experience and demonstrated engineering capability will also be considered.
  • Massachusetts Second Class Engineer license or a higher-grade Massachusetts Engineer license. A Massachusetts Second Class license is beneficial, not required.
  • U.S. Coast Guard engineering credentials. Relevant USCG credentials and substantially equivalent operating experience are accepted qualification pathways and will be considered alongside demonstrated engineering capability.
  • Professional Engineer licensure, PMP certification, or an MBA.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, SketchUp, and/or SolidWorks.

All Reworld positions require a candidate's ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the role while upholding Reworld's Values, including (but not limited to) contributing to a safe and inclusive workplace, delivering results through trust, and building breakthrough capabilities.
