Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Fiber Test Engineering Support Technician to join the Power & Thermal Management division in New London, CT. The Fiber Test Engineering Support Technician performs comprehensive testing and evaluation of fiber optic cables, connectors, and advanced connectivity solutions to ensure product quality, reliability, and compliance with industry standards. Accurately document, analyze, and communicate test results to engineering and product development teams, providing critical data to support innovation and product improvement. Collaborate with cross-functional technical teams to troubleshoot testing challenges, identify root causes of equipment or process issues, and recommend effective solutions. Utilize industry-standard testing methodologies, including TIA and Telcordia requirements, along with specialized equipment such as IL/RL meters, force testers, endface geometry measurement systems, fiber inspection tools, modal explorers, and environmental chambers. This position offers the opportunity to work with next-generation fiber optic technologies, collaborate with innovative engineering teams, and contribute directly to the development and qualification of products used in critical network infrastructure worldwide.

What Will You Do?

  • Carries out test plans following standard testing procedures for existing and new product designs for both internal and external customers.
  • Creates, maintains, and presents test reports with summaries and analysis. Maintains continuous communications with design staff regarding test progress and results. Provides recommendations to engineering design staff for design improvements.
  • Designs test fixtures and test setups as necessary.
  • Troubleshoots testing methods/setups when needed. Recommends improvements to test methods and procedures, as needed.
  • Maintains lab equipment and equipment certifications.
  • Initiates and facilitates the ECN (engineering change notice) process.
  • Performs first article requirements checking and first production evaluations.
  • Utilizes agency (UL, TIA, CSA, IEC, etc.) publications and requirements.
  • Performs other similar and related lab or testing duties as required.
  • Willing to travel if necessary, typically less than 10%.

Education:

  • Typically requires an associate degree or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • Typically requires 1-3 years of related experience.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of optical fiber connectivity.
  • Must have strong computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and data base software, e-mail and meeting management software. Ability to use internet and web-based resources efficiently and effectively. LabView and SolidWorks experience preferred.
  • IL/RL testing, endface geometry, visual inspection of connector endface.
  • Fiber termination and polishing, fusion splicing.
  • Requires strong organizational and time management skills, close attention to detail and be-able-to effectively handle multiple priorities. Must possess project management skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and manage to a project plan, establish priorities, work to deadlines and control a-number-of projects at various stages of work.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills and be-able-to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Must be an effective listener, able to extract necessary information and validate understanding of the information.
  • Must have manual dexterity for mating and removing fiber optic connectors.
  • Must have strong scientific analytical skills and proven ability to efficiently research and summarize information in an effective manner and make recommendations based upon analysis.
  • Must be highly collaborative and able to work in a team-based environment and foster open communication and support in an environment of innovation and creative change.
