DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Executive Communications, the Senior Communications Manager, Team Member Engagement develops and executes communication strategies that inform, engage and support team members across UC San Diego Health. This role serves as a trusted internal communications partner for teams that lead projects and initiatives that recognize and amplify individual and team achievements, support a safe and secure workplace, and advance belonging and our collaborative work culture.

The Sr. Comms. Manager develops internal communication plans and project briefs; drafts and edits content for multiple internal channels; coordinates stakeholder reviews and approvals; builds communications within designated digital platforms, including SharePoint and Emma; and executes timely distributions that promote awareness and participation.

This position serves as the primary internal communications lead for annual campaigns, including the wellness and safety surveys, Improvement Excellence Awards and Showcase, Safety and Security Town Halls, Holiday Joy events, Pride Month activities, and other efforts that foster connection and belonging among team members across the health system.

Responsibilities include developing promotional content for events, preparing leadership messaging and instructional aids for supervisors and managers, and executing multichannel campaigns that inform, inspire and encourage action. Additional responsibilities include serving as the backup managing editor for our weekly Physician/APP Update newsletter.

The successful candidate will be a strategic communications planner with exceptional writing and editing skills who can translate complex information into clear, concise and engaging content, tailored to drive specific actions within diverse internal audiences. The team needs a new member who has demonstrated experience with the full communications lifecycle (from inception to planning, distribution to measurement) and technical abilities in Emma email distribution, SharePoint, and other Microsoft products.

The ideal candidate possesses strong project management and organizational skills, keen attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Success in this role requires a collaboration mindset, a service-oriented approach, and the ability to build productive relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

This position also serves in rotating emergency response roles, including:

  • Serving as the health system's Public Information Officer approximately six times per year for one-week on-call rotations.
  • Participating in an on-call rotation supporting Hospital Command Centers during activations and emergency events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a bachelor's degree in a related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training. Related experience: Content creation and distribution, including web pages, memorandum, promo copy, and presentation slides.

  • Demonstrated experience and proven knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of communications technology and the ability to guide technical staff or carry out technical work, including design concepts, media, and related applications.

  • Strong understanding of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure, along with awareness of current affairs and issues affecting higher education and/or health sciences.

  • Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long- and short-term strategic communication plans.

  • Proven ability to advise and support leaders on a wide range of communications needs, from developing effective strategies to responding thoughtfully to sensitive or complex issues.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with strong active-listening abilities and sound judgment in sensitive situations.

  • Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and project-management skills, with the ability to identify potential issues, prevent problems, and develop effective solutions.

  • Thorough knowledge of the appropriate protocols and communication channels for engaging with internal and external audiences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated experience with internal employee communications.
  • Previous experience working in healthcare, academic medicine, higher education, government, OR other highly regulated organizations.
  • Ability to measure, analyze, and translate communications content performance.
  • Familiarity with digital communication platforms such as SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Emma.
  • Familiarity with project management software such as Asana to manage and report progress on multiple projects.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • This position requires participation in the on-call rotation for one week (Wednesday through Wednesday) approximately 5 to 6 times per calendar year.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $100,100 - $187,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $47.94 - $89.80

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
