Job Purpose

The Senior Accountant will execute full-cycle accounting and monthly closing procedures, prepare financial statements, assist with audit preparations, set up projects, and provide accounts payable oversight. May also assist with preparation of client invoices and payroll functions. The position will play an essential role in supporting the Controller in ensuring the integrity of financial information, preparing reports for management, and setting up projects for our leading engineering and environmental firm.

The compensation range for this position is $85,000-$110,000. This range reflects the full span of qualifying experience and certifications for the role; final offers are commensurate with the selected candidate's experience level.

Duties & Responsibilities

Month-end closing procedure

  • Prepare monthly accrual schedules and journal entries
  • Review & evaluate trial balance for accuracy
  • Perform account reconciliations
  • Review trend income statement and evaluate for accuracy
  • Update budget vs. actual reports

Quarterly reports and reconciliations

  • Bank reports and covenant calculations
  • Quarterly 941 reconciliations
  • Additional key account reconciliations and adjustments
  • GSA reporting
  • MD Sales and Use Tax
  • Year-end W-2 and 1099 processes

Assist with external audits

  • Financial statement review
  • Overhead rate audits
  • Workers Compensation audits
  • 401(k) plan audits

Maintain project setup in Unanet

  • Assist with setup of new projects in Unanet, coordinating with the Controller and Project Managers
  • Ensure all information from the project setup form is accurate and in accordance with the contract and proposal
  • Enter relevant information in Unanet, including contract limitations, billing instructions, and people assignments

Prepare various month-end project accounting reports

  • Assist with preparation of monthly project management report list
  • Assist with the maintenance of various job status reports
  • Ability to discuss project financials with Project Managers and respond to related requests
  • Prepare monthly business unit reporting for Directors

Accounts Payable Review

  • Review account coding for accuracy
  • Reconcile credit card transactions and expense report submission
  • Review invoice coding for accuracy
  • Review A/P Aging Report
  • Update cash flow tracking and projections

Bi-Weekly Payroll

  • Review hours and rates for accuracy
  • Review pay code summary, OT, and labor variance adjustments
  • Review employee benefits and deductions for accuracy
  • Reconcile payroll accrual and expense accounts and prepare payroll accrual J/E
  • Process bi-weekly 401(k) contribution funding

Accounts Receivable

* Review and post deposits and customer payment application

* Review of A/R Aging and coordination with A/R Specialists

Other Responsibilities as needed

Requirements

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional accounting experience. Experience in public accounting a preferred.

Desired Qualifications

  • CPA or CPA candidate a plus
  • Strong computer and accounting system aptitude - Unanet GovCon experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP
  • Familiarity with State/Federal contracting, FAR familiarity a plus
  • Experience with project-based accounting
  • Familiarity with cost-plus, time and materials, and fixed-price contracts
  • Attention to detail and high-level analytical skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Able to handle confidential material
  • Ability to prioritize and organize efficiently
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently
  • Ability to communicate across various functional levels of the organization
