OVERVIEW

Veeco customers rely on highly available semiconductor manufacturing equipment to keep critical production work on schedule. As a Senior Field Service Engineer, you will lead onsite installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities for complex Veeco systems at a major customer site in San Jose, California. Your technical decisions will restore equipment performance, prevent repeat failures, strengthen customer confidence, and improve service execution across the installed base. You will also develop junior field service engineers and help shape consistent service methods, documentation, and customer-site practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the installation, upgrade, calibration, testing, warranty service, preventive maintenance, and repair of Veeco semiconductor equipment while meeting customer and Veeco safety and security requirements.

  • Diagnose complex equipment and system malfunctions, determine root causes, implement corrective actions, and verify stable equipment performance before returning systems to service.

  • Own onsite technical coordination and customer communication, providing clear status, risk, and recovery updates for equipment-related activities.

  • Improve service quality by creating, implementing, and sharing new processes, methods, and technical solutions that reduce downtime and prevent repeat issues.

  • Mentor and train junior field service engineers in troubleshooting, safe work practices, documentation, and customer-site execution.

  • Document equipment events, corrective actions, and daily service activity accurately in the Veeco Service Portal and complete required follow-up actions.

  • Maintain compliance with safety, intellectual property, confidentiality, travel, and expense policies while working at customer sites and during travel.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or a related technical field and at least 8 years of semiconductor equipment experience; military technical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

  • Experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, or repairing complex semiconductor process equipment in a customer-site or production environment.

  • Ability to work primarily at a major customer site in San Jose, California and relocate to the area upon hire if not already local.

  • Ability to travel domestically, and occasionally internationally for training, including periodic travel with limited advance notice.

  • Ability to work in a cleanroom for extended shifts, remain on your feet for up to 12 hours, lift up to 50 pounds, and respond to occasional emergency call-ins.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Advanced knowledge of vacuum systems, gas delivery, electronics, mechanics, pneumatics, robotics, chemistry, and semiconductor wafer-processing equipment.

  • Experience supporting metal-organic chemical vapor deposition systems or comparable deposition equipment is strongly preferred.

  • Skilled at reading and interpreting electrical schematics and piping and instrumentation diagrams to isolate faults and plan safe corrective action.

  • Proficient in system integration, equipment testing, debugging, and the safe use of hand tools on complex electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical assemblies.

  • Working knowledge of semiconductor safety practices, cleanroom protocols, hazardous materials controls, and contamination-prevention requirements.

  • Skilled at translating complex technical findings into clear verbal and written updates for customers, peers, and management.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and OneNote for service reporting, scheduling, communication, and technical documentation.
