Job Summary
Fishbeck is pursuing a full-time Senior Civil Engineer to work in our southeast Michigan offices. The primary duty of this engineering position is to be responsible for administration and construction oversight on behalf of our municipal clients for projects of varying size and scope. This position requires self-motivation, commitment to high-quality work performance, excellent planning and communication skills, demonstrated ability to work with municipalities, government agencies, and the public, and the ability to provide leadership to staff in a project team environment. Applicant must be willing to travel and work in an outdoor environment.
Primary Functions:


  • Administration and coordination of multiple municipal construction projects.
  • Verify the Contractor's completed work is in compliance with the contract documents for each project.
  • Schedule and facilitate all necessary project meetings, which may include preconstruction meetings, progress meetings and public meetings, and distribute agendas and meeting minutes for each.
  • Supervise engineers and technicians performing inspection, administration, and documentation for infrastructure projects from pre-bid meeting to contract close-out.
  • Oversee the generation of all project pay estimates, contract modifications, work orders and other generated documents.
  • Review work produced by project oversight team in both the office and the field and verify the acceptability of the generated documents.
  • Receive and review all certificates of inspections, tests, permits, warranties, and approvals required by the Contract Documents.
  • Ensure the field designed Work is coordinated with the design expressed in the Drawings and Specifications and the Contract Documents
  • Prepare Work Directives, Field Orders, Change Orders, and Bulletins as necessary to ensure the proper performance of the Work and the completion of the Work within the Contract Time.
  • Coordinate, witness, and document equipment start-up, facility commissioning, and testing for individual equipment components and systems and for the entire Work as required per the Contract Documents.
  • Provide technical leadership for complex or unique assignments.
  • Provide guidance and training to inspection staff.
  • Read and interpret complex contract documents and utilize the information to determine the most appropriate solutions to unforeseen project issues as they arise.
  • Monitor activities of assigned staff for conformance with contractual requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, local agencies, and the general public.
  • Effectively communicate project status and issues to client and formulate viable solutions.
  • Review and draft responses to Contractors correspondence and claims as required.
  • Monitor the project budget and communicate any issues to the client as soon as they are known so that corrective action can begin.
  • Assist with business development and growth efforts.
  • Manage internal project services contract budgets.


Minimum Physical Requirements


  • Ability to stand and sit as needed on project sites. Ability to drive a motor vehicle to reach work sites; ability to maneuver project sites with uneven terrain. Ability to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds of testing equipment or materials.


Desired Education
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
Desired Skills/ Experience:


  • PE License in Michigan is preferred.
  • Potential candidates must have 10 or more years of municipal construction experience. Experience working with the City of Detroit, Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, Great Lakes Water Authority, or Oakland/Macomb/Wayne Counties is preferred. Experience with Michigan Department of Transportation is a plus.
  • Prior experience as a Project Engineer or Assistant Project Engineer performing oversight and administration for underground utility, road and/or bridge construction projects.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage projects ranging from local streets to complex urban freeways and structures.
  • The ability to develop innovative solutions and sustain partnerships.
  • The ability to resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
  • Strong teamwork and leadership capabilities.
  • A valid Michigan driver's license with a good driving record.
