Department Description

Job Summary

Under supervision provide general laboratory maintenance and assist with research at an experimental fish rearing facility located near Byron, CA. Perform culture of all life stages of delta smelt, longfin smelt and two live prey species for smelts. Clean, service, and monitor bio-filtered and recirculating fish rearing systems and labs. Conduct general maintenance of outdoor sheds and laboratories/equipment as needed.

This position will be opened until filled. Applicants will be screened on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to apply by date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lift or move 40-75 lbs. on regular basis to make salt-water or move fish around facility and up to 180 lbs. on occasion with assistance.
  • Work under indoor and outdoor conditions over rough terrain daily.
  • Physical strength and endurance to move throughout facility.
  • May encounter spiders, snakes, wasps, and other animals occurring in field conditions.
  • Ascend and descend ladders up to 20' on occasion.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is located off the UC Davis campus near Byron, CA.
  • Work occasional overtime, weekend shifts, and some holidays to meet operational needs on short notice.
  • Work-shift changes hour with change in day length twice yearly to accommodate change in day length.
  • Vacations are restricted during busy spring-spawning period.
  • Non-smoking environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Minimum of one year experience with aquatic animals and/or in animal husbandry.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Knowledge of human or animal biology with an understanding of biological and chemical systems.
  • Basic skills working with hand tools and power tools for light construction, PVC plumbing and weed control.
  • General knowledge of computer software

Preferred:

Preferred Education/Experience

  • A minimum of 10 semester hours in biological or chemistry sciences.
  • 3-6 months of work experience in fisheries or fish hatchery related areas.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Knowledge and basic understanding of water quality.
  • Knowledge of recirculating, bio-filtered fish rearing systems.
