THE ROLE The Director Nursing has direct overall responsibility for the operation of nursing services across multiple units. The Director Nursing implements the hospital's mission, philosophies, goals, standards, policies, and procedures. Administrative responsibilities include planning, budgeting, staffing, and managing and evaluating direct reports. The Director assures that the provision of nursing services is integrated and in support of the strategic plan with a focus on highly reliable care, performance improvement, throughput, capacity management and appropriate utilization of resources. Assumes an active leadership role inter-professionally and works collaboratively to ensure an integrated system for delivery of care. The Director uses critical thinking skills for effective problems solving and clinical decision making. Provides leadership and acts as a resource for the practice of nursing and customer relations. The Director has the authority and responsibility for administrative decisions and functions as an Administrator on call (AOC) on a rotating basis with other directors and executive leaders. This position will oversee: Medical/Oncology, Surgical/Orthopedic, Nursing Supervisors, Family Maternity Center, ICU, ER and Progressive Care Unit. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Creates a nursing climate that encourages teamwork, fosters mutual trust, and engages a high level of commitment to the purpose and values of the organization as well as facilitates and encourages caregiver involvement and collaborative relationships.
- Assesses the quality of care rendered and supports improvement activities to assure quality, timely, and appropriate clinical services are provided to all patients.
- Maintains patient care services policies and procedures, utilizing current evidence to update.
- Serves as an advocate for patients/families in regard to decisions for resolutions of ethical dilemmas.
- Develop and monitor financial improvement plans; assure targets are on track or completed.
- Participates in the negotiation and monitoring of contract agreement compliance with the Washington State Nurses Association, physicians, and service providers.
- Develops annual departmental budgets, which will include appropriate volume and revenue projections and reflect the most cost-effective means of delivering services to achieve outstanding quality.
- Prepares nursing capital equipment list and requests funding from Executive Leadership.
- Monitors Nursing department monthly operating review reports to assure that budgetary goals are met; significant deviations are adequately investigated, and appropriate action taken.
- Develops and implements nursing action plans to align with the service areas strategic plan; periodically reviews and updates the plans to reflect changing customer needs and strategic opportunities.
- In conjunction with fellow Core Leaders, maintains Inpatient Nursing in a state of readiness for inspections by accrediting agencies.
- Develops and implements Inpatient Nursing performance improvement activities in accordance with hospital, ANCC Magnet, CMS and TJC standards.
- Selects, develops, and mentors Inpatient Nursing Managers. Leads the management team in planning, organizing, and responding to identified trends. Creates opportunities for growth, development, and improvement of services.
- Collaborates with Human Resources to achieve the highest levels of performance and caregiver satisfaction by retaining, developing, and attracting the most competent caregivers. Ensure formal workforce planning is in place and goals are being achieved. Ensure effective labor management relationships.
- Serves as the Executive Sponsor for all Inpatient Nursing root cause analyses (RCA). Oversees completion of RCA improvement plans.
- Partners with and routinely meets with Medical Directors and Physician Division Chiefs.
- Takes emergency action when required.
- Demonstrates an awareness and relevance of research in nursing.
- Evaluates practices to identify area for improvement or opportunities for research.
- Collaborates with Nursing Leaders to ensures quality control monitoring is completed.
- Collaborates with Nursing Leaders to ensure monitoring of quality initiatives and outcomes.
- Clearly communicates by leadership and example, an organization of openness, trust, learning and teamwork.
- Establishes positive working relationships with others within the organization as evidenced by observation and/or feedback received during the year.
- Supports concepts of high reliability and leads by example, coaching and monitoring safety.

- Provides input regarding the continuing education and development needs of nursing leaders.
- Maintains the security and confidentiality of data and information used in the performance of the incumbent's daily duties conforming to hospital policy, laws and regulations as appropriate.

- Maintains positive working relationships and fosters cooperative work environment.
- Monitors turnover and develops alternative solutions to retain employees.
- Provides required reports and information on a timely basis.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related field
- Master's Degree
- Upon hire: Washington Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)
- 5 years in Nursing leadership experience
- 10 or more years in Nursing experience in an acute care setting
- Ability to demonstrate the special skills required to care for patients and their families according to standards. - Flexible interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate the exchange of information within all levels of the organization. - This position requires knowledge of growth and developmental needs of patients and families. Recognizes and responds to differences in legal consent issues of patients and families, ie consent forms, advance directives and DPOA. Serves as an advocate for patients/families in regard to decisions for resolutions of ethical dilemmas
- Incumbent must recognize and respond to the behaviors of patients and families in each age category
- Demonstrates the commitment to co-workers and team success standard of conduct by actively participating as a member of a team to move the team toward the completion of goals
- This position requires the use of personal protective equipment during various tasks / activities. Personal protective equipment includes but is not limited to gloves, masks, safety glasses and gowns.
