Position description

Junior/Assistant/Associate Specialist - Tang Lab, Diabetes Center

The Tang Lab in the Diabetes Center at University of California, San Francisco is looking to recruit a Specialist.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Incumbent will be expected to be responsible for mouse colony management, mouse dissection and tissue collection, various cell infusions, cell transplant surgeries, after surgery care, mouse glucose and body weight monitoring.
  • Research activities to be carried out by the incumbent will include various mouse tissue collection and processing, mouse cell isolation, human blood sample processing.


Required Qualifications:



  • Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must have (or in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences (or related science) or at least four years of research experience.
  • Specialist appointed at the Assistant rank must have (or in the process of obtaining) a Master's degree in biological sciences (or related science) or a baccalaureate degree in biological sciences (or related science) with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Specialist appointed at the Associate rank must have (or in the process of obtaining) a Master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences (or related science) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.
  • Knowledge of and experience with mouse husbandry and handling.
  • Comfortable working with laboratory instruments and computers; Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Comfortable working with primary human blood samples.
  • The ability to work under minimal supervision after the initial training period is key for this position.
  • Strong organization skills in time management and maintenance of accurate notebooks and computer files.
  • Team player with good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to learn and highly motivated to succeed.
  • Willingness to be flexible with work hours to accommodate experimental schedules.
  • Applicant's materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Prior experiences with mouse surgery.
