Job Summary

Works under the General supervision of the Sterile Processing Manager and direct supervision of the Sterile Processing Shift Supervisor. Cleans, assembles and sterilizes equipment, supplies and instruments. Decontaminates, assembles and sterilizes surgical instruments utilizing steam autoclaves and Plasma low temperature sterilization equipment. Technicians perform high level disinfection of equipment and instrumentation, utilizing Automatic Endoscope Reprocessing units and manual soaking protocols. Extensive training on each protocol for established time line depending on experience and skill level. Skill assent will be utilized to establish all training time lines.

Essential Functions:

  • Technician maintains all hospital Service behaviors with Trust, Respect and Excellence. Role modeling the hospital service behaviors. Create pride and joy in the work and department team. Assist in the orientation and training of new staff members. Foster the culture of recognition with all co-workers. Technician demonstrates the ability to perform all duties within the AAMI / AORN standards. Technician demonstrates the ability to follow all Manufacture intentions for usage for all equipment and instrumentation reprocessed. Decontaminates, assembles and sterilizes all equipment and instruments properly and completely. Maintain all proper procedures and guidelines during the cleaning, preparation and sterilization process. Ensure all steps are followed during the Decontamination cleaning and inspection has. Comprehensively utilizes all electronic tracking systems as intended and implemented. Reports any discrepancies within the safety arena I.E. Sharps, medication, or damaged equipment and instrumentation received. Technician demonstrates the ability to perform all Collection and distribution of instrument sets & equipment duties for the departments serviced. Technician demonstrates the ability to perform all Decontamination maintenance duties completely, including sink cleaning, stainless steel counter top cleaning. Complete all washers, cavitation machine and cart washer efficacy testing. Sweeps and mops all floors. Technician demonstrates the ability to perform all Assembly maintenance duties completely. Cleaning and stocking of work stations Pre-work and Post Work processes. (50%)
  • Clean all stainless steel counter tops. Organize instrument staging rack and prioritize all instrument sets. Technician demonstrates the ability to perform all Sterilization maintenance duties completely. Organize sterilization work stations to include Biological incubators staging area. Organize Sterilization racks. Clean stainless steel counter tops. Technician demonstrates the ability to provide optimum Customer service during computer e-mails, phone calls, or in person. Provide accurate information to all customers and assist in problem resolution to completion. Coordinates all patient care efforts with multidisciplinary teams within the hospital. Being Professional in all communications, both electronically and in person. Assist with all on-going departmental Quality improvement processes. (30%)
  • Provides direct assistance to all Ambulatory, Ancillary, & OR staff members in managing their instrumentation sets maintenance and updates. Utilizes all hospital corner stone training modules, departmental in-service training and off site training sessions to ensure that all regulatory agencies, manufacture recommendations, and certification practices are followed and understood. Reports any and all hospital policy non-compliance to the shift Supervisor and/or the Sterile Processing department Manager. Reports, removes and documents all defective materials or equipment to shift Supervisor and/or the SPD manager. Assists the OR staff with all criteria within the case cart and instrumentation assembly process. Fosters the culture of co-worker recognition and the Rewards and Recognition programs. Begins each shift with review of all e-mail communications, and answers all requests in a timely manner. (5%)
  • Practices sound safety and infection control measures with all job duties performed. Reads and understands all hospital policies directly related to safety and infection prevention. (5%)
  • Reports all identified safety or infection control issues to immediate Supervisor and/or the SPD manager. Maintains quality control observations with all equipment and systems that are utilized to perform the daily operations and job duties. Works to ensure a safe environment for all patients and co-workers. Evaluates daily practice in relation to professional SPD standards, statutes, regulations to include hospital and departmental policies and standards of care. Acts as a patient advocate Assures patient privacy before, during and after all work activities. (5%)
  • Assures patient and coworker safety by properly performing all job duties. Promotes positive interpersonal (customer) relationships with fellow employees, physicians, patients and visitors. Treats these individuals with courtesy, dignity, empathy and respect; consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communications. Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 0 -1 year of sterile processing experience

Licenses:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of hospital safety hazard protocols including universal precautions and body mechanics ergonomics.
    • Ability and aptitude to maintain all quality control standards established in the decontamination, assembly and sterilization work areas.
    • Ability to maintain all departmental documentation duties including but not limited to electronic records maintenance, verification, validation, and completion within the decontamination, prep and packaging and sterilization areas.
    • React calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
    • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing and maintain professional communication both electronically and in person.
    • Technician maintains respect for all coworkers by acknowledging their values and beliefs.
    • Technician remains versatile and performs any and all job duties that are assigned to you, to support the daily operations.
    • Being on time every day and ready to work at the start of the shift.
    • Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, Sterile Processing Microsystems, One Source document management.
