General Notes

This is for a position at J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.

Purpose

The position will conduct geothermal research and work on multiple current fundings exploring geothermal resources, reservoir engineering, techno-economic analysis, and other emerging geothermal energy-related topics. The selectee will be expected to develop funding and work collaboratively with the team.

Responsibilities
  • Research - Conduct research on geothermal reservoir engineering and techno-economics that align with and contribute to the HotRock group at the Bureau of Economic Geology

  • Writing - Publicly present and publish project results and reports, where applicable, in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Proposal development - Plan and propose research and programmatic activities to external funders including DOE, DOD, private industry, and foundations. Research should be in alignment with HotRock BEG's mission, goals, and priorities. All research proposals should be discussed with the supervisor in advance of submission to assure consistency with HotRock BEG's goals.

  • Various other duties as assigned - Mentor students, post-doctoral scholars, and other personnel on projects by organizing regular internal team meetings and tracking progress throughout the duration of the project.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate must:

  • Hold a Ph.D. or Masters in earth sciences or engineering with at least two years of relevant experience in geothermal energy

  • Proven capacity for innovative, creative scientific analysis

  • Excellent data management skills

  • Proven publication skills and verbal communication skills

  • Proven ability to fund and lead research

  • Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines, including geology, geophysics, and engineering

Preferred Qualifications

Broad expertise in geothermal systems, specific expertise in reservoir engineering, dynamic simulation, history matching, techno-economics, and/or developing various machine learning models. Experience in coding in Python/Julia, or similar languages and industry-standard reservoir simulators. Geothermal field project experience, either in industry or academia.

Salary Range

$80,000+ depending on qualifications
