Are you passionate about System Design and Innovation? S&C Electric Company is seeking a dynamic individual to join our Technology Breakthrough and Innovation team. As a Mechanical Project Engineer-Vacuum, you'll be crucial in ensuring continued innovation and supporting our diverse team.

The Technology & Breakthrough Innovation (T&BI) team drives the creation of new product solutions for S&C's customers by exploiting new technologies and enabling breakthrough product development for the fast-evolving, intelligent power grid. This role supports the development and production of Vacuum Interrupter technologies using specialized prototyping and testing laboratories that lead to new S&C breakthrough products. As an experienced mechanical engineer in vacuum systems, you will have to opportunity to design devices that interrupt powerful short-circuits, collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to specify materials and manufacturing processes, and analyze assemblies that experience a dramatic range of electrical, mechanical, and environmental scenarios.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Actively collaborating with a team that conceptualizes, designs, prototypes and tests unique interrupters that meet required switchgear specifications and relevant industry standards. Proposing novel design elements that have the potential for IP protection.
  • Executing rapid design-build-test cycles with prototype parts made from stainless steel, copper alloys, and ceramic components.
  • Developing internal and external suppliers to implement robust fabrication and critical cleaning processes, ensuring components arrive ready for assembly.
  • Specifying and documenting the mechanical and manufacturing aspects of a design from conceptualization to production stability.
  • Developing, overseeing, and reporting test programs to verify the mechanical and/or electrical integrity of a design.
  • Maintaining and expanding the capability of the teams' development laboratories.
  • Support ongoing production of vacuum interrupters. Work with analytical labs and quality control to prevent and debug production issues.
  • Directing investigations to seek root causes for design performance using formal problem-solving techniques.
