Position Summary

Responsible for all food service duties including mass food preparation for daily consumption and special events for 60 clients. Promote and maintain food quality, balanced meals, proper food inventory and compliance which health and safety policies.

Essential Functions



  • Develop weekly nutritional meal menu for a 62-bed shelter program
  • Responsible for preparing, serving, storing and handling food in accordance with Department of Public Health standards
  • Maintain proper inventory and food portion to support budget cost meal preparation.
  • Provide Orientation to clients, staff & volunteers on kitchen safety and service.
  • Enforce and maintain all Food Service, Health and Safety Code and OSHA policies.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of kitchen, dining hall, appliances and other areas of food service, including dish washing.
  • Maintain positive working relationship with collaborative partners at GWHFC and provide support to the Meal Engagement Program
  • Assist with coordination of donations, while maintaining records and accurate inventory.
  • Ensure daily food production duties are being completed, including cleanliness and organization of the pantry and equipment.
  • Maintain records and logs related to kitchen services.
  • Perform pre-safety checks and routine inspections of food equipment, report major repairs or services needed and all emergencies, accidents or equipment breakdown immediately to Director.
  • Establish and maintain positive professional relationships with staff, clients and visitors.
  • Must maintain flexibility in working varying shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays and special events
  • Facilitate cooking classes for program participants to improve independent living skills
  • Participate in ongoing trainings relevant to food handling and supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders and transitional age youth.


Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work while standing for long periods of time during shift.

Minimum Qualifications



  1. Must be a certified manager food handler under the California Safety Code 97-0071.
  2. Preferred Culinary Arts degree and/or 2 years of food handling experience.
  3. Must be TB cleared prior to working and possess a CPR and First Aid Certificate.
  4. Microsoft Office applications and excel a plus.
  5. Ability to place orders and calculate inventories for production.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



  1. Must have work experience in kitchen/food service, (knife skills, health, sanitary regulations, cooking skills and working with large equipment).
  2. Ability to carry out assignments independently, maintain good rapport and communication with other co-workers, clients and the public.
  3. Education or experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders preferred.
  4. Excellent communication skills for interaction with TAY experiencing housing instability.
  5. Strong work ethic, personable, dependable and must be efficient.
