Position Summary

The Facilities Associate position is designed to give practical support by providing janitorial services and light maintenance for the designated facility. The position is designed to provide on-site services five (5) days per week, which may include weekends.

The Facilities Associate must fully embrace the ministry and mission of The Salvation Army, accept its Christian principles and values, and protect and enhance the image of The Salvation Army to the public. As well as perform other assigned duties as directed.

Specific Duties

Although not limited to, the following are the responsibilities of the Facilities Associate assigned to the Placentia Emergency Shelter:



  • Perform monthly power washing of windows and building exteriors.
  • Clean restrooms, common areas, dining area, and office spaces daily.
  • Maintain site clean, free of overgrown weeds, garden free of overgrown plants, site upkeep, trimming, and edging.
  • Keep all outside areas, including parking lot free of trash and debris.
  • Wash and clean TSA vehicles weekly including interior.
  • Help perform minor repairs not limited to fixing broken locks, replacing door assembly, replacing broken outlets, replacing bulbs, etc.


  • Maintain current inventories of all cleaning supplies, restock as needed, notify supervisor when reordering is needed.
  • Provide regular status reports to Supervisor regarding issues resolved, those needing attention, and those currently in progress, report all incidents of property damage immediately.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Over 18 years old.
  • GED or HS diploma.
  • Criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience maintenance (preferred)
  • Verifiable experience as a maintenance worker or other similar position, preferably in a shelter or residential setting.
  • Experience working with hand and electrical tools.
  • Must be in good physical shape as the job requires lifting and working in tight spaces and working outside during the different seasons.
  • Ability to organize and safely maintain work areas to ensure compliance with all OSHA requirements.
  • TB-cleared prior to start date.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



  • Driving Test and clean MVR check (preferred).
  • A criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
  • Must have ability to communicate effectively and remain positively engaged with co-workers, guests, volunteers, vendors.
  • Must model professionalism.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in carrying out assignments independently.
  • Good time management, organization skills and follow through.
  • Strong sense of workplace ethics and understanding of confidentiality protocols.
  • Flexible availability must be able to work any shift and/or assigned schedule.
  • Able to function in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment and be adaptable.
  • Must be able to implement trauma informed care communication strategies when resolving conflict to not re-traumatize guests with your interactions.
  • Computer literate able to use Microsoft Office: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook email. Ability to effectively use office equipment (fax, scanner, copier, printer).
