The program's mission is to train psychiatrists who are clinical experts and leaders in the care of complex, underserved, ethnically diverse, urban patient populations through supervised and mentored experiences in diverse clinical settings and practices. While LAGMC - one of the largest public safety-net hospitals in the country - is the primary training site, residents also train at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Hospital, Keck Hospital of USC (a tertiary-quaternary care private hospital), and USC's student mental health center. Residents have many opportunities to engage in the teaching and supervision of medical students, and residents are required to complete scholarly projects as part of their training. In the last academic year, 18 residents gave national presentations and/or received national awards or fellowships. Graduates of the program pursue careers in academia, the public sector, and private practice.
