I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Provides care for the psychological and physical needs of patients for C.A.T. scans. Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient comfort and modesty always. Obtains and reviews the requisition for C.A.T. Scan. Properly identifies patients according to the NPSG. Reviews Radiologist imaging protocol, patient questionnaire and medication home list before any procedure is performed.
2. Participates in transfer of patients if needed, positions and instructs patients regarding the procedure to obtain the desired diagnostic image and results.
3. Follows all department established and appropriate policies and procedures as required. Makes changes and adjustments to techniques as required by observance of Radiologist to obtain a high-quality study with the lowest possible dose.
4. Provides protection to unaffected areas of the body from radiation exposure utilizing lead shields in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
5. Performs complex specialized tasks associated with the performance of CAT scans. Sets up and operates CT Scanner for all CT interventional studies, which include biopsies, drainage, aspirations, and spinal injections.
6. Assists Radiologist during procedures as required.
7. Evaluate CT scans for technical quality; collates processed images in sequence and appropriate label. Evaluates CT scans to determine if additional scanning is required. Perform 2 and 3 dimensional reformations of CT scans as per protocol or Radiologist direction. Charge procedures and supplies in department RIS system. Ensures that CT studies, examination requisitions and other related records are properly completed for proper patient identification, statistical and billing purposes.
8. Prepares CT images for reading by Radiologist through PACs. Starts IVs and administers oral and IV contrast as per policy and protocol. Verifies there are no contraindications to the administration of contrast and notifies Radiologist.
9. Orients and trains new CT Technologists and students.
10. Maintain accurate patient records, documents all CT information; including contrast reactions through the occurrence reporting system, radiation dose, and contrast dose.
11. Stocks and cleans scanner rooms, and notifies supervisor of supply needs.
12. Transport patients as needed.
13. Works as Radiographic Technologist and performs duties in other areas and/or modalities as needed. Maintains competence in standard radiologic procedures by rotating into radiology areas as assigned.
14. Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor. Takes defective equipment out of service.
15. Maintains work area in clean and orderly condition and ensures that examination rooms are properly supplied with equipment and materials. Initiates requisitions for supplies as required
16. Understands and practices ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. ARRT certification in Radiology is required.
2. RTR licensure in Commonwealth Massachusetts is required.
3. CT modality requires a Sub-specialty (CT) certification within 1 year of employment.
4. BLS certification is required.
5. Maintaining all area specific CEUs for ARRT, DPH according to regulation is required.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.

Physical Demands should be adjusted as necessary. If the position requires that the individual be required to lift things, climb, move things, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time or engage in other physical activities, those activities should be generally described along with the approximate frequency of those activities.
