The position will dig into the details of managing projects, mentoring early career professionals, site-civil design, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, regulatory compliance, and local/state/federal permitting, while further developing the business skills needed for a successful consulting career.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Assist with managing projects, budgets, schedules, and proposal writing with significant client interaction;
  • Tasks related to mentoring and training early career professionals and design staff;
  • Collaboration with peers, senior managers and other offices to ensure project success;
  • Ability to manage and adapt to changing scopes and schedules;
  • Develop feasibility studies and estimates through early site evaluation, preliminary ordinance and permitting research, and environmental due diligence research;
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and stormwater management design;
  • Erosion and sediment control design;
  • Site, grading, drainage, utility, transportation, landscape and detail design;
  • Strong ability to understand topographical surveys and contour grading;
  • Identify and track permit compliance needs for individual sites and projects that include conditional use permits; special exceptions, commission permitting, etc;
  • Develop construction documentation, site plans, calculations packages, SWPPPs and bid documents;
  • Support construction and post-construction activities that may include submittal review, addressing requests for information, and as-built certifications;
  • Site visits and travel to localities for site application meetings, planning commission hearings, and board of supervisors' meetings.


Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology. (required)
  • Advanced degree in civil or related engineering. (preferred)
  • Professional engineering (P.E.) registration (preferred)


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience in a civil engineering consulting environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • AutoDesk Civil 3D, HydroCAD, and Bentley Flowmaster. (required)
  • Bentley Microstation ,ESRITM ArcGIS, SWMM, HEC-RAS, HY8 (preferred)
  • An outstanding track record for client management and technical leadership. (preferred)
  • Project experience involving stormwater regulatory/NPDES compliance, local ordinance compliance, and assistance in securing bonds/sureties. (preferred)
  • Experience working on demanding, schedule-driven, and/or legally sensitive projects. (preferred)
  • Detailed Virginia and North Carolina stormwater regulatory knowledge, especially VSMP regulations and NCAC rules. (preferred)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
  • Travel to sites and localities. (required).
  • Health & Safety training may be required.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
