Job Description

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is on the hunt for an experiencedSenior Structures Engineerto conduct Aerostructures Airworthiness Analysis of advanced and highly modified air vehicles at theNASA Armstrong Flight Research Center(AFRC). As aSenior Structures Engineer,you will:



  • Apply your knowledge of engineering technology to the various research aircraft and experiments in NASA's Flight Loads Lab (FLL).
  • Perform structural analysis on existing NASA aircraft as well as future X-Planes.

A week in the life of aSeniorStructures Engineer:



  • Perform independent stress analysis/checks.
  • Design ground test fixtures and aircraft test fixtures.
  • Assist with future flight/ground test planning, hazard analyses, and ground functional tests.
  • Review project instructions to ascertain requirements, specifications, procedures, objectives, equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions.
  • Set up and conduct tests or studies of complete systems, components, or concepts under research test conditions.
  • Ensure performance of hardware development, qualification, test, and evaluation.
  • Perform integration of automated tools developed for simulation and systems test into the project-testing mainstream.
  • Analyze project objectives and requirements, develop plans for conducting projects, provide support for the project safety review process.
  • Review project instructions to ascertain requirements, specifications, procedures, objectives, equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions.
  • Set up and conduct tests or studies of complete systems, components, or concepts under research test conditions to investigate proposals for improving performance or other factors.
  • Record test or report procedures and results, numerical and graphical data, and make recommendations for changes.
  • Create reports and other documentation necessary to describe the results of studies and/or tests.
  • Analyze indicated and calculated results in relation to requirements, specifications, or test objectives.
  • Mentorengineers in specific technical areas and/or the system engineering process and project management principles.
  • Perform work in accordance with NASA ISO AS9100 procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.

Job Requirements

  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or physical science and 7+ years' experience REQUIRED or

    • Master's degree in engineering or physical science and 4+ years' experience.


  • Ability to secure and maintain aSECRET security clearance.
  • Experience with metallic and composite structural analysis methods.
  • Skilled in usingindustry standard hand calculation methods, i.e.,Bruhn, Roark, or Peterson.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical detail and assembly drawings develop per ASME Y14.100.
  • Familiarity and/or experience working with:

    • 3D CAD package including Pro/E (Creo preferred), Catia, Unigraphics, Ideas Master Series SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.
    • Structural analysis of aircraft structure desirable.
    • Developing aerodynamic loads.
    • Mathcad and MatLab desirable.
    • Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 23 and Part 25 desirable.
    • Structural requirements for military aircraft desirable.
    • MS office tools, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.


  • Must be able to work in a dynamic and multi-task work environment by prioritizing work and coordinating task/project schedules.
  • Must be able to manage and decompose requirements in specific technical areas.
  • Strong communications and ability to work in a team environment a must.


NOTE: Candidates must be able to work within core hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on a 9/80 work schedule.

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is committed to pay transparency for our applicants and employee-owners. The salary/hourly range for this position is$80,000- $120,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors permitted by law.
