Job Description:

Airbus Helicopters is looking for a Senior Director, Safety Programs to lead our Aviation Safety and Health & Safety Department based in Grand Prairie, TX.

You will be responsible for the development and management of Airbus Helicopters North America (AHNA) regional Aviation Safety and Health & Safety programs. Reporting directly to AHNA's Accountable Executive on all regional safety matters, while also maintaining a safety reporting line to the Airbus Helicopters Aviation Safety & Quality Network for global safety initiatives.

You'll implement and promote a comprehensive, integrated Safety Management System (SMS); oversee and manage interfacing with regulatory Authorities from the aircraft State of Design and State of Operation; and maintain compliance with local and federal regulations (including the FAA, NTSB, and OSHA). You'll also support Airbus outreach and education initiatives that promote aviation safety and education throughout the North America region, Airbus Group, and its customers.

Your Challenges: Primary Responsibilities:

Safety Management System: 25%

  • Reports to the AHNA Accountable Executive on all safety matters as defined under the Director of Safety under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 5.
  • Has the authority and responsibility to stop work in an area to remedy any serious safety hazards.
  • Responsible for the implementation, resourcing, and periodic review of the Airbus Helicopters SMS program for the North America region.
  • Ensure compliance of the AHNA SMS program to 14 CFR Part 5 and ICAO Annex 19 Safety Management.
  • Lead the development and implementation of an effective internal safety audits and assessments program for aviation safety and health & safety.
  • Develop and implement an effective Human and Organizational Factor (HOF) assessment tool for Aviation and H&S investigations.
  • Provide the necessary resourcing to ensure an effective safety promotion program and its compliance to regulations, AH requirements, and industry standards.
  • Provide information and advice to senior management and to the President and Head of North America AHI on matters relating to safe operations.
  • Serves as the focal point for safety and the deployment of the SMS within the organization

Aviation Safety: 25%

  • Ensure compliance to Airbus Helicopters Aviation Safety and Accident Investigation policy and procedures as outlined under COM-16 and COM-20.
  • Ensure compliance with FAA and military/ DCMA regulatory and aviation safety aspects associated with the AHNA Texas and Mississippi production and completion facilities.
  • Report to AHNA Senior Management on current aviation safety trends, concepts, safety regulations, standard processes, and industry safety statistics.
  • Maintains the SMS manual IAW 14 CFR Part 5
  • Ensures ASRs are received, investigated and appropriate actions are taken to ensure a safety positive culture

Health & Safety: 25%

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and conformity to all standards during the conduct of all activities.
  • Advise AHNA Senior management on current Health & Safety trends, concepts, safety regulations, standard processes, and industry safety statistics.
  • Ensure OSHA auditing, recordkeeping, and reporting meets regulatory compliance.
  • Work with HR Department for employee injuries and regulatory reporting requirements as needed.

Product Safety Promotion & Customer Outreach: 10%

  • Represent AHNA at regional Industry-Aviation Association-Authority safety committees and safety initiatives (i.e. Vertical Aviation Safety Team (VAST), GAMA Safety Committee, Vertical Flight Society, CHC Quality & Safety summit, etc.).
  • Lead the Airbus outreach and education initiatives that promote aviation safety and education, including activities such as AH Aviation Road Shows, digital/social media, and FAA/EASA/Customer safety seminars.
  • Promote the implementation of SMS throughout the region and its customers.

Safety Strategy: 15%

  • Responsible for the design, implementation and continuous improvement of an integrated Aviation Safety and Health & Safety department under the principles of SMS.
  • Assist in developing and championing the safety strategy for North American region
  • Lead the periodic evaluation of the North America regional safety structure, programs, and its resourcing.
  • Collaborate with the Airbus U.S. Commercial Safety team on initiatives and customer support for commercial and helicopter products in North America.
  • Supervise and direct the activities of subordinate personnel, as well as train and ensure employee development in areas of fleet safety, flight safety, accident investigation, SMS, and Health & Safety.

Your Boarding Pass: Required:
  • Bachelor of Science in Aviation Safety, Aviation Management or related field.
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years progressive experience in aerospace manufacturing, program management, flight operations, accident investigation, or aviation safety with demonstrated ability to work across functional areas influencing behavior and culture.
  • Knowledge of and experience in applying federal, state, and local laws and regulations in an aviation environment
  • Experience leading Organizational Change efforts for large-scale safety or operational initiatives.
  • Experience with Safety management principles and tools
  • Certification in Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Formally trained in Aviation Accident Investigations
  • Formally trained in Aviation Human and Organizational Factors (HOF)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government security clearance
  • Extensive working knowledge of applicable FAA, ICAO, NTSB regulations
  • Extensive knowledge in establishing and Managing an SMS program and safety culture
  • Experience with High Reliability Organization principles and its implementation
  • Knowledge of Aviation legislation and ICAO Annexes
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form in English
  • Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Project Management Systems, Smartsheet, Data analytical tools (PowerBI or Tableau)
  • 30% Domestic and International Travel involved
  • Must be US Person under ITAR definition (U.S. Citizen, green card holder or person covered under our existing ITAR license)
Preferred:
  • Master's Degree in Aviation Safety
  • FAA rotorcraft pilot certificate and/or A&P license
  • Formally trained in risk management techniques (e.g. Bowtie Risk Assessments)
  • Certified as a business continuity and/or crisis management professional
  • Trained and certified in lean six sigma (Green belt or Black belt)
  • Familiarity with helicopter design, systems, aerodynamics, and operations
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior executives and with senior management and technical representatives from regulatory/investigative agencies
  • Knowledge of French or German

US Person status under ITAR definition (meaning you have: U.S. Citizen status, green card holder status or person covered under our existing ITAR license) is required for this opportunity.

  • Carrying: able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs. Several times a week
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs. Several times a week
  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools. Several times a week
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer. Several times a week
  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.
  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices or on the production floor. Several times a week
  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice.
  • Walking (include routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces. Several times a week
  • Personal Protective Equipment required: Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, Safety Shoes, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Respirators/Masks, and/or Protective Gloves as required by site and/or customer site
  • Administrative position only PPE required: Steel-toed shoes are required for all shop floor visits, appropriate hearing/eye protection may also be required when visiting the shop floor.
