SUMMARY

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) fulfills multiple roles to support unit operations, including working as a Nursing Support technician (NST), assisting as a Unit Clerk (UC) or Patient Safety Monitor (PSM) when needed, or shadowing a nurse under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). These roles enable the Student Nurse Extern (SNE) to meet various unit needs and contribute to a safe, organized environment. When working as a nurse shadow, the Student Nurse Extern (SNE) is under the direct supervision of an RN, where they gain insight into the responsibilities of providing safe, culturally sensitive, and age -appropriate care. This includes educating patients and families, ensuring continuity of care, coordinating with caregivers, managing patient information, and effective communication across settings. Utilizing the nursing process, the Student Nurse Extern (SNE) assists in both direct and indirect care activities for patients across age groups, from neonatal to geriatric. This experience spans essential components such as assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome identification, planning and coordination, implementation, and evaluation. Additionally, the Student Nurse Extern (SNE) supports patient advocacy, education, performance improvement, leadership, and professional development.
