The University of Texas at Austin is seeking to hire an Assistant Director (AD) to lead the In-House Design Team within Planning, Design and Construction (PDC). AD will provide leadership for a team of 4-7 design professionals responsible for providing in-house professional design services. Purpose

Oversee the Design Team and provide leadership, strategy, oversight, and expertise. Supervise a team of architects, engineers, and other professionals as they perform planning, feasibility, design and construction administrative services for all UT Austin campuses.

Responsibilities
  • Mentor, guide, manage Design Team staff individually, and as a collective team. Support production of engineering and architectural technical document sets or project planning documents. Manage team workloads, financial activities, business development, and development of methods and processes to create better outcomes. Serve as decision authority on work acceptance as delegated by Director of Project Management.

  • Resolve complex technical design issues by developing options keeping in mind client's needs, total cost of ownership, UT Austin's Capital Investment Program, and environmental impact. Provide technical guidance to Design Team staff regarding complex projects and design issues. Produce complete planning documents and architectural/engineering schematic, design and construction documents to ensure high quality, innovation, functional design and adherence to codes and standards.

  • Disseminate information and directives from PDC leadership to team to achieve maximum success in meeting UT mission and vision. In collaboration with Director of Project Management, develop commonalities and best practices and ensure appropriate training and development of design team members.

  • Prioritize and allocate resources to ensure delivery of key initiatives and maintain agility to maximize resource utilization. Communicate and advise leadership in developing projects and initiatives. Be flexible to adapt to ongoing changing needs and priorities. Interpret information and ascertain a plan of action, utilizing existing resources and staff.

  • Provide effective visual, verbal, and written communications at all levels of the organization. Serve as primary point contact with campus partners.

  • Maintain licensure, including continuing education requirements.

  • Other related functions as assigned

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field. Minimum of five years experience as a designer or project manager to include experience preparing and editing technical document sets. Professional Architectural or Engineering license or licensed in another State with the ability to obtain reciprocity in Texas within 6 months of employment. Demonstrate an understanding of basis of design. Demonstrate an understanding of codes. Proven ability to manage multiple projects at once. Strong knowledge and skills in AutoCAD and Revit applications. Demonstrated experience working independently. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Access.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree or advanced degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field. Eight or more years of experience as a designer or project manager to include experience drafting or editing technical document sets. Experience with BIM, Bluebeam, Sketchup and other 3D sketch software. LEED accreditation. Knowledge of specialized standards related to construction in the area of expertise. Experience in higher education design including, but not limited to, laboratories, classrooms, student spaces, housing, food service, athletics and recreation spaces. Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with external clients and co-workers.

Salary Range

$140,000 + depending on qualifications
