The Department of Labor and Industry is seeking a highly motivated and organized Legal Assistant 1 to provide vital clerical support to the Deputy Chief Counsel, Assistant Counsels, and the division's Legal Office Administrators (1 and 2) within the Office of Chief Counsel (OCC), Unemployment Compensation Division to produce prompt, top quality work. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Legal Assistant 1, you will draft, format, and process legal documents such as petitions, appeals, complaints, motions, briefs, and more, in addition to invoices, and correspondences for various courts and quasi-judicial agencies. You will be responsible for processing and filing documents for the appropriate courts and agencies, and archiving or purging files in accordance with Commonwealth policy and retention directives. Legal Assistants may also perform other clerical support duties such as handling mail, answering the telephone, scanning files, faxing, using a copy machine, maintaining a calendar, and managing office equipment.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 2 days per week (anticipated). In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. Applicants new to the Commonwealth will start at the starting salary rate of $39,785.00.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement or investigative work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires six months or more of full-time experience in a legal office or legal setting.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
