Job Summary

Do you enjoy working with data to translate information into insight and using research to solve pressing issues in US health care? UTSW is seeking an individual with these interests - along with exceptional data management, analytical, critical thinking, and organizational skills - to join the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Biostatistical Consultant II. The individual in this position will join a dynamic growing research unit and support data management and analysis efforts in health policy, population health, and health services research studies. This important role is well-suited for motivated self-starters interested in working with national experts and building expertise in health care data.

Projects May Include:



  • Develop statistical analysis plan and independently conduct analysis under guidance.
  • Opportunity to gain directed experience and ultimately develop expertise answering clinically relevant questions with large health datasets for a variety of relevant research questions across a wide variety of medical specialties and scientific disciplines.
  • Ability to work with interested faculty researchers to across UTSW to develop project ideas into analysis plans, using electronic health records (Epic) from several different health systems, administrative claims-like data from local and commercially-available large datasets, publicly available datasets, and disease registries.


Experience and Education

Master's degree in biostatistics or related discipline, or MPH with a concentration in biostatistics.

Minimum three (3) years experience in statistical consulting with preference given to experience working in biomedical or health care environment.

Requires working knowledge of SAS, SPSS or other major statistical package (S+, R, etc.) and Microsoft Office (ACCESS and EXCEL)

Lab Duties

Assists Clinical Scholars and CRC in:





    • collecting data to perform analysis
    • creating data reports
    • preparing and submitting documents to NIH
    • monitoring compliance documents
    • designing and creating merge data files and warehouse data sets
    • performing complex analysis,identifying and interpreting trends and patterns of variations and implications for improvement initiatives.


  • Will provide interpretation of data, statistical analysis and application to team for decision making to improve study outcomes.
  • Responsible for creation and/or utilization of UTSW tools for capturing data.


Job Duties

  • Collaborates with investigators to identify problems and provide statistical consultation including design of experiments of survey, analysis of data, interpretation of results and preparation of reports.
  • Writes statistical portions of manuscript based on results of analysis and address manuscript revisions based on reviewer's comments.
  • Assists client data organizations.
  • Performs statistical computations.
  • Provides graphical and tabular representations.
  • Develops, maintains and modifies programs for in-house use.
  • Collaborates with investigators in grant development including statistical design of studies and preparation of statistical portion of grant proposal.
  • Performs non-statistical components of consulting such as providing analogous examples and explanations using non-technical terminology and helping researchers formulate and clarify research issues.
  • Visits client's work field whenever possible to establish rapport and to become familiar with and interested in client's research and data.
  • May supervise biostatistical consultants and/or data entry operators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
