Experience and Education




  • Bachelor Degree in Biology, Medical Technology or other physical or natural science field.
  • One year of training or experience in clinical cytogenetic field is required.
  • Certification as Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Cytogenetics by ASCP is required.


Additional Information: Work schedule within lab operations of Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM; negotiable weekend shifts.

Job Duties

Collects and prepares biological specimens for cytogenetic analyses from various human tissues, such as blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, and solid tissue, utilizing aseptic techniques, appropriate containers and instruments, collecting media, antibiotics, anticoagulants, and preservatives.
Accurately record patient demographics and relevant history.
Cultures cells of various types using appropriate biohazard and/or aseptic techniques. Selects appropriate culture media for specific specimens and monitors cell growth.
Harvests cell cultures using appropriate techniques, such as mitotic arrestants, cell releasing agents, cell fixatives, etc. Prepares microscopic slides using routine and banding techniques.
Analyzes chromosome preparations, selecting cells, counting and analyzing each under microscope; prepares several karyotypes (i.e., classification or arrangement of chromosomes into a standard order) per case; summarizes results of analyses using the ISCN and submits file for final reports.
Operates and maintains inverted microscope, photomicroscope to analyze cells, and computerized capturing system to photograph appropriate cells from each case.
Organizes workload within assigned section of laboratory, scheduling work assignments, maintaining quality control of data generated, directing laboratory procedures, and generally affecting efficient utilization of methodology and equipment.
Assists in development of cytogenetic training programs, implementation and training for high school, college, trainees, medical students, resident physicians, and and postdoctoral fellows in basic cytogenetic skills as required.
Participates in conferences and other educational activities to further knowledge of cytogenetics. Collects and organizes research data for project reports as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.
Provides mentoring to Cytogenetic Technologists and Technicians with less experience. Assists Supervisor/Manager in monitoring laboratory operations to ensure compliance with departmental, institutional, accreditation, and government requirements and regulations.
Maintain regulatory documentation such as, but not limited to maintenance logs and Quality Assurance program documents

**Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
