Job Summary:

This position is responsible for assisting the management of a highly complex food operation that includes Rathskeller, Stiftskeller and the Brat Stand, a large restaurant complex with alcohol service and concession sales. The Assistant Manager will provide direct supervision to full time and part time staff. This position is responsible for overall management of the unit, sales, customer satisfaction, food safety and profitability.

The position is scheduled when the business needs dictate. This position works a combination of days, nights and weekends. Consistently 2 days off every week and 45 hours per week is expected.


Responsibilities:
Oversees daily food service operations including staff management and/or customer issue resolution in environments such as dining, retail, and/or catering venues to ensure customer satisfaction and achieve food service goals. This individual identifies work unit needs and contributes to the development of unit processes and procedures.

  • 20% Develops, implements and oversees workflow components, and assigns and coordinates the day-to-day activities of food service staff
  • 5% Selects, develops, implements and schedules logistics and menus for daily and catering operations
  • 45% Leads and provides exceptional customer service, answers questions, and provides information regarding food preparation, catering, and associated activities
  • 20% Assists with unit budget monitoring, management of inventory levels, and staff training
  • 10% Monitors adherence to federal, state, campus, and local food safety regulations, policies, and procedures, identifies needs and makes recommendations for improvement to leadership

Qualifications:

1.5 year minimum Restaurant Manager Experience (Required)
1 year minimum working in an operation serving alcohol (Required)
Supervision and oversight of operations with direct supervision of two or more managers. (Preferred)
Experience with leading teams of 20+ employees (Preferred)
Excellent communication, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills


License/Certification:

Required
ServSafe Certification
Ability to produce or attain within 6 months of employment.

Required
Valid Bartender License
Ability to produce or attain within 6 months of employment.

The annual salary of $55,000 is the anticipated starting salary for any candidate who is hired for this position.

Additional Information:

The Wisconsin Union operates from several buildings on the UW-Madison campus including Memorial Union, Union South, Fluno Center, Pyle Center, University Club, Red Gym, and the Student Activity Center. The Wisconsin Union is a financially self-supporting division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Financial support for the organization is provided by income earned by over thirty food service units and a variety of nonfood units such as games, guest rooms, space rentals and campus vending. Substantial support is also provided by student fees. The total annual organizational budget is approximately $60 million dollars.
