Residential Operations is part of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). Residential Operations maintains properties consisting of residence halls, single student apartments, family student apartments, and dining commons serving over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. In addition to providing service to residents, Residential Operations maintains facilities that include conference centers, office spaces, and short term lodging and housing facilities. Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The locksmith performs journey-level locksmithing tasks and related repairs/installations for the buildings maintained by Residential Operations. In compliance with H&RS goals and objectives, affirms, and implements the department Educational Equity Plan comprised of short and long-term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for success in a multi-cultural society. Works in an environment, which is ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic. Works effectively in a team environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years experience as a Locksmith.
  • Experience with Best Interchangeable core systems and Schlage institutional lock hardware and cylinders.
  • Experience installing and servicing door hardware including exit devices (Von Duprin) and door closers (LCN).
  • Ability to work in an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic team environment. Understanding of safety practices and Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must be able to pin cores, and to cut and duplicate new keys using key-cutting machines, impressions or code key machines.
  • Ability to maintain locking systems by repairing and replacing worn springs, tumblers and other critical parts.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of a master key system, low voltage and basic electrical access controls.
  • Understanding of safety practices and Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Must have proven customer service skills with good follow through and strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience in a University Housing environment.
  • Experience installing and servicing electronic access control and security systems.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Hours and days may vary to meet the operational needs of the department. Weekend pager duty and occasional overtime also required to meet the operational needs of the department.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
  • 80% Technical/Mechanical Locksmith - Performs journey level locksmith duties such as layout, repair, installation and maintenance of master key systems, locks and lock hardware using, but not limited to hand tools and specialized equipment listed below. Manually pins cores, and cuts new and duplicates keys using manual, automated and computerized key cutting equipment. Operates computerized electronic access system, including installation, repair and maintenance of associated electronic hardware. May operate, install, and or repair security, intrusion and surveillance systems. Installs, maintains and repairs all types of building hardware such as door closers, fasteners and panic hardware. Sets-up key codes and maintains "secured" records. Maintains inventory of replacement master key systems ready for emergency re-key of facilities. Works in collaboration with various staff to maintain accurate lock and key data in TMA, KeyWatcher, and Lenel systems along with various other databases. Provides training and instruction to skilled and semi-skilled co-workers on locks, hinges, doors and door hardware, etc. Performs master key audits at various intervals throughout the year. Researches and evaluates different key and access systems. Makes recommendations to Managers and Supervisors about systems. Maintains the records for departmental safes and manages the safes (6) security changes. Performs a variety of other skilled and unskilled tasks outside of assigned trade in support of the DLG Maintenance Shop and the Santa Ynez Service Center that includes weekend pager duty and occasional overtime required to meet the operational needs of the Department. Work may occasionally involve tasks or trades outside the locksmith trade. Responsible for knowing and adhering to various UC, Campus and Housing policies as well as any work rules and guidelines.
  • 10% General Duties - Instructs or leads skilled, semi-skilled, or unskilled assistants. Responsible for collaborating effectively with the Operations Service Center. Responds in a timely manner, verbally and/or written communication, labor time, materials, repair details, etc necessary to maintain accurate and current data on work requests. Follows up with a multitude of staff and clients on work repair status utilizing the OSC or in person. Works with Conference Services staff to plan for and switch key systems and processes to meet specific conference program key and access requirements. Uses Kronos time system, punching in and out daily, as well as in and out for after-hours response and is responsible for following up with overtime sheets and keeping the supervisor and time record up to date on a daily basis. Responsible for knowing, following, and adhering to purchasing protocols. Participates in training programs, including safety and professional development. Utilizes hand held device to communicate with dispatcher, supervisor and co-workers. Researches, prices and orders materials needed to complete assigned or generated work orders. Participates in staff training & development workshops, retreats and meetings as determined by supervisor. Affirms and implements the departmental Educational Equity Plan comprised of short and long term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for success in a multicultural society. Affirms and implements the departmental "Strategic Plan" designing goals and objective that relate to the vision statement. May use, but is not limited to, any of the following tools to perform essential and or non-essential duties: May use, but is not limited to, any of the following tools to perform essential and or non-essential duties: The full range of locksmithing tools and equipment such as key cutting machines, duplicator and jigs as well as extractors wrenches, pliers, screw drivers, wire cutters, wire strippers, wire crimpers, soldering iron, fish tape, conduit benders, taps and dies, threaders, hammer, punches, chisels, files, grinders, air compressors, metal lathe, milling machine, welding machines, motorized plumbing snakes, saws (hand, table, hack & circular), routers and other carpentry tools, drill motors, drill press, hand torches, computers (desktop and laptop) and electrical test meters.
  • 5% Safety - Understanding of safety practices and UCSB Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures including but not limited to: breathing apparatus, respiratory protection, hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolding, and safety harness. Adheres to current safety regulations and precautions as prescribed by the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Uniform Building Code and EPA, including storage and disposal procedures, common safety shop practices, guidelines or polices per other applicable Federal, State and local agencies. Understands and adheres to the safety practices on use of all hand and power tools. Understands and adheres to current safety practices in relation to proper ventilation and non-smoking rules when working with flammable substances and harmful inhalants. Promptly reports on the job accidents to the supervisor. Participates in departmental safety programs. Develops, promotes, adheres to safety rules, standards or techniques as an integral part of business. Adheres and implements the 20-minute work rule for all repetitive work tasks.
  • 5% Security - Locks unoccupied areas before leaving them including windows and doors. Safeguards assigned keys and radio by keeping them on your person at all times during working hours and securing them at the end of your shift. Work keys are to remain on campus at all times. Notifies clients of work status by leaving door tag in the area if unoccupied
