Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Nutrition, chaired by Raz Shaikh, PhD, is one of eight Departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. It is the only nutrition department in the United States situated in both a school of public health and a school of medicine. The Department engages in innovative work that capitalizes on both these schools' approaches to health; thus, the Department has an unusual breadth of scientific and policy approaches. The Department of Nutrition's mission is to improve and protect the public's health through teaching, research, and practice that foster optimal nutrition. Its vision is to achieve optimal nutrition for all people around the globe. The Department of Nutrition consists of 43 primary, 6 joint, and 22 adjunct faculty and 8 administrative staff, as well as postdoctoral fellows and research staff members. During FY 2024, the Department managed over $46 million dollars in sponsored research funding.

In the Fall of 2024, the Department enrolled 332 students, including 44 doctoral, 182 masters, and 106 bachelor students. The Gillings School of Global Public Health and the School of Medicine, located across the street from each other, are closely situated on the UNC main campus, facilitating cross-school and department collaboration.

Several Nutrition faculty members are based at the UNC Nutrition Research Institute ( NRI). The NRI building is located on the 350-acre North Carolina Research Campus ( NCRC) in Kannapolis, just 30 minutes north of Charlotte. Eight universities have a research presence at the NCRC, all with a focus on nutrition-related research. The NRI building is equipped with advanced wet laboratories to meet the needs of bench scientists in their basic and applied research, clinical facilities for assessing, measuring, processing, and examining clinical study participants, and a variety of meeting areas and office spaces. Nutrition faculty are also affiliated with several other centers and institutes across UNC that foster multidisciplinary collaboration, including the Carolina Population Center, the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Center for Aging and Health, and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
Position Summary
The Department of Nutrition in the Gillings School of Global Public Health and School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ( UNC) invites applications for two (2) open-rank tenure-track or tenured positions in nutrition (one in basic sciences, one in behavioral and/or intervention sciences), with an academic rank commensurate with experience. The Department is recognized as a global leader in nutrition research and exceptional, high-quality training. The breadth of our Department's research spans from cell to society and moves from discovery to intervention delivery and dissemination.

We are seeking applicants who will build an independent research program and participate in collaborative research teams that align with existing strengths in the department. The Department is especially interested in applicants with expertise in aging research, that can be broadly defined as lifespan research, gerontology or geriatrics, or multidisciplinary research that can affect the aging process, extending longevity or affecting the healthspan. Other key areas of interest include cancer, community and behavioral interventions, and data science. These are areas of research that are critical for the advancement of nutritional science and public health at the regional, national, and global levels. Other key responsibilities and expectations will include teaching, research mentoring to undergraduate and graduate students, and participation in university and professional service activities.
