Quantum Application Software Quality Engineer

PSI Quantum
$120,000-$175,000 USD
United States, California, Palo Alto
700 Hansen Way (Show on map)
Nov 22, 2024

We believe quantum computing will change everything. It will have the power to transform the foundations of giant industries that rely on intensive computation. PsiQuantum is on a mission to build the world's first useful quantum computer, capable of delivering these transformative results. We know that means it will need 1 million qubits, error correction, a scalable architecture and a data center footprint.

By harnessing the laws of quantum physics, quantum computers can provide exponential performance increases over today's most powerful supercomputers, offering the potential for extraordinary advances across a broad range of industries including climate, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials design, and many more.

PsiQuantum is uniquely positioned to deliver on the promise of quantum computing years earlier than our competitors. Our architecture is based on photonics which gives us the ability to produce our components using existing high-volume semiconductor manufacturing processes, the same processes that are today producing billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics applications. Since photons don't feel heat, we can take advantage of existing cryogenic cooling systems, the kind that have been operating at facilities like the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC). And because photons are in fact light, they can move between subsystems at tremendous speed using standard fiber connectivity.

Our team is building a utility scale quantum computer and the software tools needed to build fault tolerant quantum applications. We're a highly motivated and collaborative group focused on a singular goal - building the world's first useful quantum computer on the fastest path possible.

There's much more work to be done and we are looking for exceptional talent to join us on this extraordinary journey!

Job Summary:

PsiQuantum's Quantum Applications Software Team is uniquely focused on building a world-class software environment for quantum application developers. These tools allow quantum applications developers to find, build, utilize, optimize and visualize large-scale quantum algorithms applied to solve classically-intractable problems. The primary role of the Quantum Applications Software Quality Engineer (QASQE) is to ensure that these tools meet the high standards expected by external users by implementing robust quality assurance processes.

The QASQE will be responsible for designing, developing, and executing comprehensive testing strategies, including test plans, test cases, and automated tests, to validate the functionality, performance, and usability of the PsiQuantum application software stack. They will collaborate closely with software developers, product managers, and domain experts to ensure quality is integrated throughout the software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute test plans: Create detailed test plans and test cases for quantum applications software tools, covering functional, performance, usability, and security aspects.
  • Implement test automation: Design, implement, and maintain automated testing frameworks and scripts using appropriate tools and languages.
  • Collaborate with development teams: Work closely with developers to understand software features and specifications, ensuring comprehensive test coverage.
  • Integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines: Incorporate automated tests into Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment pipelines to enable continuous testing and rapid feedback.
  • Identify and report defects: Document and track software defects using issue-tracking systems, providing clear and actionable reports to the development team.
  • Ensure compliance with quality standards: Advocate for and ensure adherence to software quality standards and best practices throughout the development process.
  • Assess software tools across multiple domains: Evaluate tools for quantum simulation, algorithm programming, compilation and optimization, resource estimation, and more.
  • Provide technical guidance: Offer insights and recommendations on tool improvements, feature enhancements, and potential integrations with other technologies.
  • Stay current with industry trends: Keep abreast of the latest developments in quantum computing and software quality engineering to apply best practices.
  • Document and communicate findings: Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations on testing activities, results, and quality metrics for stakeholders.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelors in a related technical area of study, such as Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Maths, Chemistry, etc., required; a postgraduate degree (Masters or PhD) is preferred
  • Technical expertise: 3+ years of hands-on experience in software quality assurance, including test planning, execution, and automation.
  • Quantum computing expertise and knowledge: 3+ years of hands-on experience using, designing, and implementing quantum application software tools; familiarity with quantum computing concepts and quantum programming languages is highly desirable.
  • Testing methodologies: Proficiency in software testing methodologies, including unit, integration, system, and acceptance testing.
  • Automation skills: Experience with test automation frameworks (e.g., pytest, Selenium) and scripting languages (e.g., Python).
  • CI/CD familiarity: Knowledge of Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment tools and processes.
  • Programming skills: Strong programming abilities in relevant languages (e.g., Python, C++).
  • Analytical mindset: Ability to critically evaluate and analyze software tools, with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous approach to identifying issues and ensuring software quality.
  • Communication skills: Excellent verbal, written, and presentation abilities.
  • Team collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively across departments, sites, and time zones; a team player who contributes positively to the work environment.
  • Adaptability: Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-moving start-up environment with a results-driven approach.
  • Results-driven: A results-driven "doer", preferably with experience in a high-throughput, rapid-delivery work environment.
